kent55
I noticed a wet spot under where I park and looked underneath to find a Goldish color dripping off the transmission. It's dripping off the transmission drain plug, but the front Passenger Side half shaft is wet. It's a 2007 2.5i stick shift. First, Is this oil and trans fluid? Second, could this be the half shaft going bad or a seal somewhere inside the transmission needing replaced? I think this half shaft has been replaced when the clutch was replaced. Max Capacity
Depending on how much fluid it's loosing, you might want to have that seal replaced. $10.00 seal, its the labor to pull the axle that's the expense. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. WahooNo2
Yeah looks like the seal. Get the subaru ones because they have an extra lip on them. Keep checking the fluid and top off as needed.
Max Capacity
FIWI, there is a difference between the right seal and the left seal. It's the angle of the wipers in the inner lip. Make sure you get the correct seal. Any dealer might have one on the shelf. Then find a local repair shop that will replace it. The dealer will want to much labor. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. kent55
So I checked the fluid level and it appears to be over filled. I'm so glad there is a dip stick. My Toyota only has a bolt on the side of the diff and that's what I was expecting here. http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy26/kent55/IMG_20160925_133155660.jpg http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy26/kent55/IMG_20160925_132454554.jpg http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy26/kent55/IMG_20160925_132534971_1.jpg Above photo is of the driver's side CV boot and I'm seeing hair line cracks starting. Is there a glue that may help slow the process?
Max Capacity
Are those OEM axles ? A little over full won't make it leak. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. kent55
OEM axles, No, I believe they were both replaced 3 years ago at 78,000 miles when the clutch was replaced..... Which is a different story.... I'm not sure about the quality of the clutch job that was done. I just got this car last month. Are the axles and seals common issues with Subarus? Car has 107,000 miles now.
apexi
The seals can get damaged when removing and reinstalling the cv axles, it's not very hard to do, so don't be too mad at whoever did the work. From what I've seen on my car, it's also common to overfill the transmission if you put in how much fluid subaru says to, which i think is 3.7qt's. I usually have to put in somewhere around 3.3qt's when I drain/refill the transmission, because I assume some fluid gets stuck in the tail end of the transmission where the center diff is. Also, I wouldn't worry about that driver side boot. I mean, you can replace it if you want to, but my rear cv axle boots look much worse than that after 202k, and they aren't leaking yet. Max Capacity
3 years on OEM axles...I don't believe they will rust like that. I think my right front OEM still has green paint on it. I bought the new new late June 2004. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. kent55
I had the seal replaced today. Ive smelled a burning smell after driving the car sometimes but I thought the smell was the clutch. Friday is when I saw a wet spot under the car. Thanks for all of the advise. Subaru seal installed. Is there a glue that may help slow the process? Level looks good to me, it depends on how the vehicle leans as well and it's not way off so I wouldn't worry about that level. Anyway - good that the seal is replaced, and we hope that it was the right leak that you fixed!

Didn't really matted much since GM filled them 1 quart short causing all of us to need new trans just short of the 1st fluid swap interval. Glad you got it fixed before it gets super cold out.
