Outback Polk upgrade

Stevh0

Recommended Posts

I ran a set of DXI 6500's in my SG forester and would like to bring them over to my 07 OB.

Will the OEM head unit have enough juice to power them properly? I have the GX204RE

Worse case scenario I could probably run a hi-level converter and power them right?

- Edit.

Instead of creating another thread, I'll continue off with this one, seeing as this is the sole reason for the upgrade.

I installed a set of Polk DB651s in the back doors and 6501s in the front doors on my Legacy. I have an amp waiting to go in to power them but right now I've been running them off of the stock headunit for a couple of weeks and I honestly don't think it was much of an upgrade - certainly not the night and day difference some people talk about. If you're going to upgrade those speakers upgrade the head unit or amp them or you won't be happy.

Hey shogun, I am planning on getting the Polk DB6501 in the front and DB652 in the rears, where did you mount your crossovers? I already changed my head unit, just a little hesitant in pulling the trigger to buy. Current stock speakers for me are getting distorted while blasting some music.

The crossovers fit nicely in the front doors around near where the inside door handle would be. I used double sided tape to mount them but you can also drill and mount them that way if you prefer or use Velcro. Just make sure you test fit the door back on before you secure them down because in the wrong position the door card won't go back on. I took some pictures when I did it I'll look for.

Metra harnesses will work for the back doors but because of the crossover setup in the front doors you'll need to cut the speaker wires and attach them to the crossover. I would do a little bit of research on the fronts before you do them just to get an idea of what you're looking at. Also you'll need an adapter to fit the speakers onto the doors themselves. There are a few good threads on here take a look to get a good idea of what you're going to need to do.

Nice, I will take a look and see what I can find.

Im probably buying the speakers from Crutchfield since they will include harness and brackets plus free lifetime install support and 60 day return policy + 2 day shipping.

Do tou really need adaptors? Do your cars come with the weather shield brackets in stock form? I just used those and trimmed the weather shield slightly to fit the MM series speakers in mine. Might as well just get a roll of speaker cable and start fresh. Thats what I did, makes life way easier. You could always get an amp with high level inputs so you can keep the stock HU. You may as well just get super cheap speakers if keeping them powered off the stock HU, most of them only put out about 18w rms so don't do a good set of speakers justice

So currently I have,

Kenwood BT61U

2 x sets Polk 6500 DXI's

1 x set Polk DB521 Co-Ax

1 x set Polk DB401 Co-Ax

2 x Polk PA660 Amplifiers

2 x Front door spacers

It might seem like I am a Polk whore, but really I just kind of bought them a couple of years ago. They are still working and sound pretty good, I figured if it ain't broke why fix it right?

The unit is probably 2012/13 unit, but it has a 6v pre out and a out a million eq settings. I would have liked to fit my double din, but for now this should do.

  • 2 weeks later...
Well I installed my Alpine MRV-F340 amp under my passenger seat this week. It was a pretty difficult install for me, or rather I should say it was extremely labour-intensive. Once I fired up the system though, the speakers really came to life. I still need to tweak the gain settings because I notice a bit of a hiss when the sound system is on with nothing streaming to it (or in the gap between songs) but otherwise the sound is amazing. It makes me want to drive the car just to listen to the sound system. The Polks together with the underseat amp are excellent and I'm very happy with the upgrade. Definitely recommend for anyone with the cash and ability to install them yourself (I can't imagine what getting all that installed would cost but it would probably push it out of my cost/benefit range).

The door panels were the easy part. Routing the battery cable through the interior, routing all the speaker wire through the console, splicing the LOC and speaker wire, pulling up the seat to mount the amp all on top of installing the speakers themselves - it took a long time all together.

Both front and back door speakers are 6.5". I used these adapter/spacers I bought off a guy that bought them from this group buy a long time ago:

But if I had to do it again I'd just buy these for much cheaper:

I thought my forester and hawk sti had horrible oem speakers. I can't believe how cheap these look and feel.

I didn't want to spend too much time on the car, so ended up just doing the passenger door. All in all, fitment was pretty easy. The biggest issue I had was deciding where I wanted to put the crossover.

Definite improvement when comparing to the other speakers in the car. The biggest difference will come when I run all 4 speakers.
