Starting/idling issues after HG replacement

Recommended Posts

Okay so I recently replaced the head gaskets and timing belt kit on my 1999 Subaru Legacy SUS 2.5 DOHC. Got the motor back in yesterday and went to start her and it didn't want to stay running. Would have an extremely rough idle right after start up and die after about 3 or 4 seconds. If you feathered/smashed the gas pedal, it would stay running but it sounded terrible.

I've done a little bit of research but can't really find any good info on what it may be.

Timing belt is 100% correct. All marks on cams were aligned and the crankshaft gear notch was lined up with the notch on the block at top dead center. All marks on belt lined up with the notches on the cam gears and timing cover.

All wiring, connectors, and grounds are good....gonna go over the motor again today to double check everything.

The only things I could think of it being are:

Bad sparkplugs. (They looked fine but they were the plugs that were in prior to pulling the motor. Along with the wires. But I thought I read something about getting new Plugs after the heads have been machined...something to do with the compression?) Plugs are NGK Iridium.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160626/4900d5ffcc14bb7b88c64c124525bc25.jpg

Bad gas. (Not sure when previous owner gassed her up but it's on E. Gonna put some 89 in it today and see if she decides to cooperate.)

I've included a few videos...

Any information will be appreciated. Thanks

Put fresh gas in her, nothing.

Removed and cleaned up the EGR valve, nothing.

Did a look over of the engine bay and everything seems to be plugged in and connected where it should be.

I'm really at a loss. It didn't do this before pulling the motor.

Another video....I'm giving it gas up until about the last 15 seconds until it just dies.

There is this loud screeching coming from something. Sounds like the starter but it's hard to tell. Along with tons of exhaust gases in the engine bay....anyone?

It does sort of seem like a fuel issue doesn't it? I've gone through the 3 lines on top of the manifold and they're all ran right, and tight.

The car has sat for maybe a month with the tank under E. But I added a little over a gallon and still nothing.

Also checked the compression in cylinders 2 and 4 and they read around 200psi. Will try to do the pass side cylinders today.

I'm this close to pulling the intake manifold off and going over everything again...

Compression test came back between 200-210psi on all four cylinders. Confirmed fuel lines are correct and tight. Put more gas in her. Nothing. Gonna get new wires this week. I'm losing my mind over this thing...

So I've gone over the engine. Almost every vacuum hose that I can think of and see is connected. Every electrical connector is connected. Pictures included...

I've also pulled the side timing covers and lined the cams up. They line up perfect. And I can assure anyone the crank notch was lined up with the notch near the crank position sensor/block. Pictures also included...

Also, unplugged the IACV and car did the same thing with start up. Unplugged the MAF sensor and car did the same thing. Was going to test both but couldn't find my multimeter.

Problem solved! I KNEW I did everything right. Everything besides the the old intake manifold gaskets off. The driverside gasket was still on. And actually had fallen off and I didn't notice it. It got sandwiched halfway over the manifold ports. Causing a major exhaust/vacuum leak. Removed it and it runs like a dream. Thank you everyone for advice and tips!http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160702/0959b197a5046ebce784ba353535cf5f.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160702/5e8502855b62c78776c3e4553e0e58c7.jpg

lol you had me so worried for my first start up.. :spin:after my refresh...whats your plate number and if i ever see you... i swear to the devil himself... i will wave hello...:offtopic::rolleyes:

good job though, was the old gasket just kaked onto the manifold and then shifted during reinstall

or did you try to use both gaskets?

some people claim that spacers help hp.

to my knowledge its only in the 400- 700+ hp range and only makes a slight difference

Hahaha no, actually, I don't remember ever removing the gaskets. And when I went to put the intake manifold back on, the driver side(not sure what happened to the passenger side gasket) was still stuck to the manifold. During installation, it must have fallen off and landed smack dead in the middle of the ports on the block, thus creating a major exhaust/vacuum leak.
