Pecosgaspacho
My daughter has a 03 legacy with a stock 2.5l and around 100k miles. She brought it home from college and I am taking a look at it . Seems to have some rod knock. I took it to a local subaru guy who quoted me around $3500 to fix the rod knock by rebuilding the engine, put in new head gaskets and timing belt etc. My questions 1. Do you think it is worth putting that kind of money into an an 03? 2. Does $3500 seem reasonable? 3. If I do just the timing belt (I can do this myself) is the rod knock going to be an engine killing problem soon?
RumbleRumble
post a video of the noise. Failed timing belt tensioners could sound like rod knock. this video shows you how to take the timing cover off to look at the tensioner enginesus.com sells rebuilt long blocks. Pecosgaspacho
Heres a video of the knocking noise. Sounds to me like its coming from inside the engine.
Sara32013
I don't believe that's a rod knock. My car sounds almost identical. Does it go away when the car warms up? Try putting a stethoscope on the oil pan, see if it's louder down there.
RumbleRumble
Hard to tell since you did not rev it. Did it run low or out of oil? Here is what rod knock sounds like. Theses are all subarus
Pecosgaspacho
Heres a couple other videos that might help. It seems worse when its cold and gets better when it warms up but its still there. I took it to another subaru guy yesterday and he seems to think it is piston slap and I shouldn't worry about it.
