Gipsy's $3k replacement.

Recommended Posts

So after i sold my beloved Spec.B I looked around at a few Gen3 wagons but none truly got my attention. After a couple test drives i realized a Gen3 is not quite what i'm looking for. At least a N/A one. So since i'm saving for a house i needed to find a cheap one so i stole a clown car.

2005 mini cooper S sport package with the JCW upper & lower grill.

164k miles on the frame, originally from Minnesota don'tcha know, but complete records of a rebuilt supercharger and engine 1,500 miles ago came with it. The PO simply wanted to recup some cost of the rebuild. It's got shitty tires and very tired looking bushings. My little project that i can'd spend too much money on. So here we go.

I'll be figuring out where exactly this oil leak is coming from, as well as installing Osram rallyes and maybe bushings? If they arrive that is.

The leak seems to actually just be a bunch spilled from the last oil change. I cleaned it up as best i could, went for a 20min drive to warm things up and checked to see if there was any fresh oil yesterday & there wasn't. Checked again this morning. Still clean. Will continue to monitor.

While waiting on bushing and go fast bits i fixed the tabs on the bonnet grille and plastidipped the chrome gas cap. It matches the wheel well trim to a T.

Also installed some Osram Rallyes and damn they're still the best bang for your buck in terms of lighting upgrade.

New Front control arm bushings should come in the beginning of next week. Pully reduction, new spark plugs, & a couple other bits soon after than :)

  • 4 weeks later...

The bushings were a huge PITA, the inner control arm took 3 hours to loosen by itself. After that it was pretty straight forward and easy. Did a quick buff and bought a new, non beaten to shit and faded grille. I was too upset to tale pictures during the LCA install but here's after the buff. Sitting in Garage during that hail storm.

Next is tint, then go fast bits and that'll probably be all i can do before my TDY to Texas which i'll be driving to.

Don't want to be a hater. But the mini cooper S... my mom's had two of them. Nothing but problems (She still has the 2010). Although I guess with the rebuilt engine you should have it for a while before those problems start coming up. Did you get the manual transmission or the automatic? The automatics in those things are a ticking timebomb.

It's definitely loads of fun to drive though...

Manual, I absolutely hate driving automatic cars.
