ej22 identification

Recommended Posts

A few years ago I purchased a 1996 Subaru Legacy gt from a friend. At the time it wasn't running so I put in a battery and had a friend replace the gas tank as it had a hole in it. The car started right up, but seemed to idle a little rough, so I opened the hood and noticed the spark plug wires had apparently been chewed by mice and were sparking. I went to O'reily's and got new spark plug wires for the motor that was supposed to be in the my car (ej25), but that barely fixed the problem, and may have actually made it worse. I never put the old wires back on to confirm. Anyways, here I am a few years later dealing with rough idle still and now intermittent stauling looking at after market parts and realized my engine has a ej22 stamp on it. First off, should I go get the correct wires for a ej22 or are they the same? Probably a stupid question either way. second, how do I identify which ej22 this is in regards to ordering parts? I've never really worked on cars and I'm not very familiar with all the parts under the hood, so all the other related posts didn't make much sense to me on how to locate and identify. I don't know where the bell housing is to locate the vin. I did notice 94 under the oil cap and no egr judging by other pictures of legacy's engine bay's. Any help figuring this out would be greatly appreciated.

Yes - wires are different between the 2.5 and 2.2....I'm not even sure how you installed teh 2.5 wires ON the 2.2....If your coil looks like this - NOTE female or male connectors - yours is the earlier version.

As noted get the NGK/Subie branded wires for best results for a '90-'96 EJ22/2.2. like these:

And if NO EGR than your CEL must be on. No easy fix w/out the correct intake manifold.

actually, in 96 the 2.5 GT and 2.2 outback had the same wires and coil. how do i know? i swapped them between my 96 GT 2.5 and 96 outback 2.2 to see if the stalling issue i was having followed the ignition system swap. the female to male switch they did was in 97 or 98, and it was on both motors, i believe.

if mice had chewed the spark plug wires, did you look for other damage under and around the intake? could be other wires chewed and grounding out under there causing your issues

yes,

new plug wires first.

NGK or subaru brand only.

new plugs wouldn't hurt either.

thank you. Unfortunately O'reily's doesn't have them and will charge fees to order them, so I'll either keep looking or order online. Is there a certain superior set I should be looking for?

Yep it looks like that

What's the very best?

You're right. My cel was on upon purchasing the car. It had several codes which I saved, but unfortunately after a radiator hose incident (documented on here) my cel quit working and when I hook up the computer it doesn't detect anything. Now this would be a blessing for some, but I wanted to shut the cel off properly. In case anyone is interested here are the codes I got prior to the cel shutting off:

P0106 map sensor code

P0325 knock sensor code

P0335 crankshaft position sensor

P0403 egr control code

P0420 catalyst system

P0441 evap incorrect purge flow

after the radiator hose incident the intermittent stauling occurred.

Yes. I also noticed a couple wires were chewed on and a couple harnesses were loose. I got the harnesses connected tight now, but there's still a couple wires either chewed or slightly melted. There was also a vacuum hose leading to no where that I couldn't find where it went so I removed it. My guess is it goes to a missing part from the swap? Idk. It runs great other than the rough idle and intermittent stauling. I am honestly skeptical of 135 hp as it seems much more than that. Lots of low end power and it climbs hills unlike any car I've ever drove. Could be the premium fuel I suppose.

So, I was able to identify the motor is a ej22e from a 1995 legacy L 5 speed wagon awd. According to this I would of once again got the wrong spark plug wires. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I should be getting these ones instead:

[ame=http://www.amazon.com/NGK-FX41-Premium-Wire-Set/dp/B000C5O1N0]Amazon.com: NGK (8004) FX41 Premium Wire Set: Automotive[/ame]

And these spark plugs:

[ame=http://www.amazon.com/NGK-Spark-Plug-BKR5E-11-Pack/dp/B000VXKDIU]Amazon.com: NGK Spark Plug BKR5E-11 4 Pack: Patio, Lawn & Garden[/ame]

Is this correct?

Also, if someone could please run a car fax on vin 4S3BK6359S6329258 my curiosity would greatly appreciate it.

wait, this was a 1996 GT originally, that didnt have a 5MT option so it originally had auto with EGR, thats what the block with the missing vacuum line is from. it got a ej22 from a 95 L manual car, which would take some wiring as well as a egr delete to work correctly, without codes. im just stating this, as it just became apparent to me.

as for that list of codes, id start looking at harness for breaks or loose grounds, thats a lot of stuff right at the motor to go bad all at once.

as for the 135hp, the GT was geared differently than the L the ej22 came out of. you can totally tell a difference when you switch back and forth (i have a 96 GT with a fresh ej25 as well as two ej22 wagons), id be surprised if i was getting more than 80ish HP at the wheels on those wagons.

HI,

Codes are mostly due to the prev. owner not doing the swap correctly.

The knock sensor's were crack-prone thru '96. By a a cheap Ebay or Amazon replacement.

EGR requires an intake w/the EGR valve and sensor. Here's a FIX...I don't know of anyway to delete the code otherwise. HOwever...i don't 'think' the EGR CEL causes drivability issues....just the code.

The press. sensor (?) on the pass. strut tower is missing a Vac line. You might get away w/just T-ing it into another line from the intake manifold...for the Evap code.

The P0420 may go away after fixing the above...or just resetting the ECU. If you can't get a scanner to read the codes - disconnect the Neg. battery terminal for 30 mins.

CEL light may be burned out from being ON all the time.

For $1.50 (paypal) you can get an Autocheck (like carfax) here: http://www.freecheapvin.x10.mx/

I didn't know the older Subies had the VIN on the block....interesting.

For future reference, the 2.5GT and 2.2 wires may have fit but they're not the same. Attached are pics of the 2 versions for the '96 GT.

Thank you guys very much for all the help! one last question, would the aftermarket ej25 headers fit? And how much of a hp increase would it be approximately? I've checked and its dual port.

Yea, I googled how to find it spent hours reading forums and looking under the hood for it. I finally gave up and found it when cleaning grease from the motor out of boredom. I figured I will show where it's at so the next person doesn't have the same trouble as me.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160324/4f0d55d7c7853f8bd276ea389432b17f.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160324/f435a080b2f6e972447a465c606b275f.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160324/b70ae719ce217c34dd359f4f95ff42ae.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160324/0cf06c4710d5556c0fc21662783c1b55.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160324/a394d0d242c8db185a1bfed1d9f96058.jpg

no idea if there is even a gain with the header, but i do have a ej25 dual port borla header on one of my ej22 wagons. popped a code, but its probably due to old cats and dirty sensors now that i have the header on there. my son is driving that car for now, so i havent had a chance to play with or change anything on it for a while
