My Car
Well I figured I might as well make a thread about this since this is a major undertaking and it's mostly new to the three of us. We're just three car fanatics with a car lift and some tools. So about a week about my buddy purchases a 97 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon from a craigslist seller about 4 hours from here. He pulled the trigger and now we have a fun new project in front of us. The previous owner said she likes to blow white smoke and currently wont start. Thats what we're working with. we figured it was best to pull the whole engine and find out for ourselves whats going on. In the process we found much oil on the spark plugs but NO OIL IN THE COOLANT AND NO COOLANT IN THE OIL. Our best guess at this point is that its bad piston rings. We also did a compression test by hand cranking the engine but that only yielded about 70psi or less in each piston. We had drained the oil at this point. Don't know for sure what difference that makes but I figured it could cause poor seals around the rings. Either way we plan on getting a closer look at the rings. Avoiding removing the heads would be best since new bolts are costly. However we're kind of amateurs. I've replaced head gaskets on a 94 legacy wagon before but never see the crank shaft or removed pistons. Anyways, enjoy the pictures. There will be more progress reports coming soon!
