03 legacy L engine lit on fire after loud pop

Recommended Posts

I was driving for about an hour on cruise control at 80mph, around 3000rpm. suddenly there was a really loud pop, smoke immediately flew out of my car and the engine revved up to 6000rpm without gaining any power. i turned off cruise control and all power to the car died. i popped the hood and the block literally went up in flames, I had to put the fire out with snow. some type of fluid all over the ground.. looks like it fried all my wiring in the area and I'm sure other things. tow truck driver suggested maybe the tranny line blew, or an electrical failure. I'm sure it's gonna be a big fix so right now I am simply curious if anybody has heard of this happening or had anything similar to this happen to them. if yes, what was your diagnosis?

odo is just about to hit 150,000. auto trans, yes there was oil but it was closing in on needing a change. I have not had any recent work done other than putting in a new radio myself. right before and even after it happened the temp gauge read normally.

and the engine revved up to 6000rpm without gaining any power.
at this point the engine is running, racing in fact,

but the trans is not engaged.

depending on the location, area of the fire,

i would suspect this is a 'trans fluid leak on the exhaust' fire

and then a trans failure due to lack of fluid.

there aren't any ''engine oil'' lines to burst.

an engine oil leak from the sensor on top of the block would not be that sudden

unless the sensor blew out of the block.

some type of fluid all over the ground.
and i don't think snow would put out a fuel fire, but maybe.

but if fuel was on the ground and the engine was on fire,

you would be lucky to survive opening the hood.

and if you did you would immediately see the fire spread to the ground at your feet.

my 95 lego blew the rear output seal out of the trans while driving 70mph

with a loud pop and a shudder which i felt in the seat.

if an ATF cooling line blew,

spraying hot fluid on the engine and the exhaust,

it could maybe cause a similar sound and shudder. ??

and with hot oil all over the place and cooking off the exhaust

once the hood was opened and ''fresh oxygen'' was introduced to the area,

poof, you got fire.

or maybe it just that long to reach the combustion temp.

or maybe your fluid had been leaking for a while,

and the pop and smoke was the trans wearing out.

most petroleum products are fairly stable until you heat them.

and then they ALL become volatile .

diesel is very stable, but once it starts smoking,

look out.

and with gasoline, it is the fumes that combust first, not the liquid.

look for a wrecked car that has a good engine and trans.

do you have comprehensive insurance?

good luck.
