timing belt marks

Recommended Posts

after checking over alot of stuff this is what i have...

i changed my oil at 750 miles and found nothing major with it, the oil was clean with no major metal bits in it.

I opened up my oil filter and cut out the filter, found zero bits of metal in it.

when i was rebuilding the bottom end I measured the rod bearings with plasti-gage and i got the following

1- .0017

2- .0018

3- .0017

4- .0019

I thought nothing of it when i was reassembling the block but did mark #2 and 4 as being out of spec.

fast-forward 3 weeks, now i have the car running and it runs way nice but it has a slight knock sound at idle, once i accelerate it's gone. I have checked over various things and all seem to check out.

Subaru FSM states .0018 as being the high-end of specs, do you think the knock is coming from #2 and #4?

I think the next step would be to just pull the plug and disassemble the engine and see what the bearings look like, remove the pistons to ensure its not piston slap.

any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

how did you get such an accurate reading with just plasti gauge? mine only could tell me if i was between .001, .0015, .002, and .003. you used kings just as i did and i was on the tight side of .0015 and.002.

now for my thoughts on your situation at hand.

King bearings make a bearing set that is .001 looser. that would have made your bearing clearances 1..0027 2..0028 3..0027 4..0029. i am not suggesting at all that you are running these bearings. but they make these bearings out of spec purposefully for high hp engines to have more oil clearance. these vehicles dont shred the bearings apart the first time they are ran, although they do have a way less of a life span than our in spec bearings.

so my point, i think you need to look for your problem elsewhere .0001 out of spec i believe is ok. these are just my thoughts on it but i know for us N/A guys we definatly have more room for bearings being on the large side and working properly.

as for the knock sound what are those measurements of the piston rings?

you did originally have a crappy machine shop, maybe they did a terrible job cleaning oil passages

thanks for the input!

yea it was a total guestimate according to the size against the ruler on the plasti gauge, but its not to hard to gauge it with the pics below.

what i wrote (as a guess) down.

Yes these are King that i bought from [ame=http://www.amazon.com/King-Engine-Bearings-CR4125XPG-Connecting/dp/B00HWO8SZQ?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00]amazon[/ame] std.

engine has been running for 2k miles now, i dont think its the crank anymore(hopefully not) as if it was rod noise i think by now it would have gave up and broke by now?

I now am getting a P0303 and i have been checking into that, i already swapped the coil and checked the spark plug, wiring, sensors all seem connected fine.

I think my IC is leaking what i am guessing is blow-by or something, looks like oil?

here is what i have for the rings, these are CP pistons 99.5 (stupid me didnt buy 99.75) and so since that noise was there on start up and has ran without locking up or any negative effects i think its piston slap more than anything.

here are the rings when i tore apart the entire engine to inspect and re-do all the work from machine shop 1

specs i used (i used .0055)

I recleaned it once i had everything apart although i didn't use guncleaning brushing or anything but i did remove all the oil passage block-off bolts the block has. I used some royal purple and brake cleaner to clean it all out, used my water hose to rush out whatever might has been caught in it.

i hope i was able to get at-least 99% of it clean.
