Rear differential leak

Recommended Posts

I've noticed my car making a whining noise coming from the rear of my car while driving at any speed. When I got under the car I noticed a pretty nasty leak from the diff. Does anyone know a part number for the gasket or do I have to use gasket maker from a tube?

I need the gasket for the diff cover which has the drain plug and fill plug on it.

i dont know about the gasket,

but i'm sure you can find it at http://opposedforces.com/parts

i would do a drain and see if there is any metal in the gear oil.

it really isn't worth taking the diff apart.

and depending on the leak, pinion seal? or axle seal?

it may not be necessary.

the pinion seal can be done without opening the diff.

but it is tricky setting the correct torque on the pinion shaft bolt.

having said all that,

thery do not fail often.

as a result, they are cheap to buy.

so for 50$ you can get a good used unit and install it.

maybe more work,

but if it is whining, and there may be damage,

why take the chance.

just replace it and move on.

but i would confirm it is the diff first.

usually rear end whines are wheel bearings not the diff.

the diff rarely fails unless it runs out of fluid.

so it may be a bad diff for you.

look fo a diff here, http://www.car-part.com

sort by distance, you do not want to pay shipping unless the diff is almost free.

good luck.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out the website. I tried to upload a photo from my phone but I don't think it went through. I'm actually trying to sell the car. I'm military stationed in Japan. B4 legacys are everywhere here. I can find a used diff here easily.

assuming you are still driving the ncar,

have someone drive while you ride in the back seat.

LISTEN to see if the noise is more on one side than the other.

if yes, it is a wheel bearing , if no, then maybe the diff, maybe.

if you are confident itis the diff,

just replace it.

making sure the a final drive ratios match.
