David E
My '99 Legacy Outback with the 2.5 DOHC has got a new problem. After every fillup car won't immediately start. Have to try 2-3 times and work throttle to keep running. Any other time fires right up - hot, cold, doesn't matter. What could it be?? Thanks
FLlegacy
Fuel pump or sock filter. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
Impulse
do you give it a sec or two after turning the key (before crank) to let the fuel pump build up pressure? Try turning the key to ON and waiting till the light whining sound stops before cranking. going with what FLlegacy said, every time you fill up you depressurize the fuel tank and your fuel pump may need that extra time to pressurize the system again. If that's the case, the fuel pump or the attached filter may be going and preventing quick pressurization of the fuel system.
David E
Have tried the turn key on for a few seconds before trying to start - no difference. A friend suggested the fuel vapor solenoid...??
FLlegacy
Try starting it next time with the cap loose. If the tank pressure is causing a hard start that should negate any pressure issue. Although it will probably set a cel. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
David E
Update: Tried starting with the cap off - started fine. Took cap off, left it off for 10 mins - put cap back on - started fine. Replaced the purge solenoid - did not fix the problem. Still does it on every fill-up, but starts fine any other time.
mailman
Could also be something in the evap system but I don't know it too well. Does it smell like gas when you start the car after fillup? Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
David E
No fuel smell. Have tried only partially filling the tank - same issue. Just removed the evap canister - it looks OK. Any way to test / clean the canister??
David E
Ok, good news. I took off the evap canister, cleaned it off and blew low pressure air thru each of the openings. While I was under the car saw an electric valve connected to the hoses running in/out of the evap canister and fuel system. disconnected it and spray cleaned the connector. Drove it about 100 miles and filled up today. Started right up.
