Auto Transmission Question

Recommended Posts

I'm having a bit of a hard time find out what transmissions are compatible across the 4EAT platforms. Meaning, is a 4EAT out of a 95 Lego (mine) same as one out of a 99 Impreza? Same as the one out of a 2001 Legacy? I'd imagine over time the wiring changed, but not sure if the later models could be converted over. Or if by some dumb luck, they are they completely the same over a decade!

generally spaeking, suabru changes their car, trans engine, design every 5 years.

but not always on the exact same date.

so 95 - 99 cars, for the most part, have the same parts and will swap.

regarding the 4eat specifically :

95 - 98 auto trans are the same EXCEPT for the final drive ratio.

all ej22 auto trans cars, 95 - 98 , have a 4.11 ratio. (ej18 cars as well.)

all ej25 auto trans cars, 95 - 98 have a 4.44 ratio.

so find a matching ratio trans from that year group and it will bolt in and run.

this is true fore the lego L, brighton, GT, LSi, outback, forester, and low end imprezas.

i am not familiar with high end imprezas.

99 was a transition year with most cars getting the new PHASE 2 4eat.

this means the 99 - 03 trans will interchange with each other,

EXCEPT for the final drive ratio.

outback, GT, and forester got the 4.44 ratio,

the others got the 4.11 ratio. (including low end imprezas)

I DO NOT KNOW ABOUT HIGH END IMPREZAS. not my thing.

exception: all H6 cars got a different 4.11 auto trans, specific to the H6.

the 90 - 94 auto trans will swap into the 95 - 98 cars,

but the ratios changed every few years for some cars / engines, usually 3.9 or 4.11.

there were no 4.44 ratio cars in the 90 - 94 years.

(i think the SVX H6 EG33 engine got a 3.5656 ratio.)

so it is more complicated, and harder to make a blanket statement.

but if the ratio is a match, the trans will swap, plug and play.

so that is the over view,

if you have a specific swap in mind, ask.
