Nismo253
This morning I started my car and it sounded a little off, but nothing too bad to make me check immediately. But I checked it in the middle of my work day and saw that my a/c and idler pulley belt was sheared and took a closer look to find that my main crank pulley or harmonic balancer (whatever it's actually called) was sitting really far back, so I looked even closer and apparently it worked itself apart and the middle was no longer attached to the crank It also ground itself into my front timing cover a little bit. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c6/Nismo253/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsswxsk3dl.jpeg http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c6/Nismo253/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsmpp0lzmy.jpeg[/ http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c6/Nismo253/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsr5ezyvzr.jpeg So I bought a new one and put it on along with a new a/c belt. Glad I caught it before it became a really bad issue
Nismo253
Has anyone had this happen before?
5thElement
Yep this is common with these cars. Crankshaft pulley is what it is called. Search Google for Legacy gt lightweight crankshaft pulley and you will see many aftermarket companies selling them. Or search on Google. site:Legacy gt.com crankshaft pulley Hopefully you didn't suffer radiator or timing belt cover damage.
apexi
Yeah, kind of worries me as my car gets closer to 200k. There are a few threads out there on this topic, hopefully your ac compressor and wiring is ok. I've read as the crankshaft pulley shifts, it can move the AC belt backwards and damage the AC components. Here's one of the threads. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/f-crank-pulley-229893.html

Nismo253
I guess I also have to buy a new front timing cover; better do that asap
TheMonaLisa
I want an aftermarket pulley, just wish they weren't lightened. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
turboboost
Deteriorating OEM crank pulleys is a known issue, especially among the older or higher-mileage LGTs, but fortunately, the damage wasn't too bad for you. Avoiding this exact situation (or worse) is why I went with the Grimmspeed LWCP preemptively. Solid aluminum piece that weighs in at 2.05lbs, so it's 3.6lbs lighter than stock, but heavy enough not to trigger a CEL (unlike other LWCP alternatives). Aside from the peace of mind, I've also noticed that idle and lower-RPM engagement is smoother. Here's a relevant walk-through: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/install-lightweight-crank-pulley-224447.html
5thElement
Well at least it didn't take out your radiator. Hmm lets see name all the LGT built in failure points. Catted up-pipe. Banjo bolt filters. Crankshaft pulley. Stock tune. Wheel bearings. CV boots....
