Timing issues resolved... Attn Glorified High School Mechanix

Recommended Posts

So heres the nitty gritty, the woodruff key was worn the frick out. between a gnarled crank shaft, the woodruff key, and the gear...

Lets put it this way, there was more than 20 degrees of slop in the gear. Even with a new key installed i still got 10 deg of play. So we welded the crank, we welded the key, and then we welded the gear. the tensioner bolt was stripped before i pulled the bolt, so needless to say... lets see how long this car can go. im sitting at 270,000 miles ish... who wants to place bets on 300k?

you probably did not need to weld,

a search would have showed the solution.

but congrats on getting it back on the road.

the tensioner is bolted to a bracket,

which is replaceable.

so if you have problems with it being too loose, jumping time,

replace the bracket.

with the crank sprocket welded,

you will never remove the oil pump.

but you will still be able to do a complete timing belt job.

unless you welded the crank pulley as well.

make sure the crank bolt is tight,

135 ft. lbs.

or the crank pulley could get sloppy again.

so i'll take the''over'' bet.

it will run as long as you keep oil in it,

or until the oil pump looses pressure.

happy motoring,

enjoy.
