95 legacy motor help

Recommended Posts

I was replacing the harmonic balancer on my 95 Legacy yesterday, and in the process, the crank pulley bolt snapped. So part of the bolt is still inside.

So now my car isn't able to be driven.

From where the harmonic balancer has been bouncing around, after we took it off, you could see the damage on the back of the harmonic balancer.

Also, on the timing belt cover, you can see where it sits, the damage it has done. The little metal piece that sits inside is broken, I guess they call this teh keyway or wodruff key?

I NEED HELP PEOPLE!

Would it be better to just find another motor and put it in?

My car has 199,891 miles on it.

there are a couple of possibilities.

1/ drill out the rest of the bolt and start over.

1.5/ a talented shop MAY be able to weld on a bolt head so you could use that to remove it.

just a guess,

the bolt may have ''permanent'' thread-lok on it.

this means heat will be required to help remove / unthread.

2/ remove the crank sprocket and replace it and the pulley with good used.

then have both welded on to the crank.

since this is a permanent fix and the last time it is coming apart,

i would replace every thing else timing related or behind the sprocket.

3/ replace the engine

btw, the crank sprocket is probably messed up as well

but new good used parts you can get it running again,

if you can get the bolt out.

1/ if you have EGR on your 95, the 96 MUST have EGR.

almost all ej22 engines 95 - 98 from auto trans cars have EGR,

but double check.

1.5/ if you need EGR and the 96 does not have it,

there is a workaround by using your 95 intake manifold.

not hard to do and very effective.

2/ the 96 ej22, 2.2L engine uses a different exhaust manifold, y-pipe,

but that is the only difference.

so if you can get the exhaust y-pipe with the engine,

(tell them to throw it in for the price, often they are ''cut'' out and useless, but ask.)

you should be good.

any new-ish parts on your 95 will swap over,

do use them .

once you have completed the swap,

sell your engine for $150 - $250.

some one will buy it as is.

or fix it and sell it for $600.

the 95 ej22 w/EGR is the universal go to engine to swap into 95 - 99 legos, imprezas with bad engines.

it is plug and play.

it is like O negative blood, any one can use it.
