Freeplay of cam gears while belt off - 2.2 SOHC

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

So I'm doing the timing on my 2.2.. I really just need to make sure this is normal before I proceed with this job. I have my crank at the 12 o'clock position, as it should be. (The notch, not the arrow). What worries me is with the belt off, the passenger side cam has a bit of wiggle room to spin, but the driver side is a different story. It feels like it's under a lot more tension than the passenger side. Is this normal? Am I freaking out for nothing?

no worries.

all the passenger side valves are closed,

the cam lobes are not holding any valves open,

therefore, no tension on the cam shaft / sprocket.

on the driver side,

the some of the valves are being held open.

(the intake on at least one cylinder, i think.)

so there is tension on the cam shaft / sprocket.

what year ej22?

good luck

Pretty sure it's out of a 98 Legacy, based off the engine vin. I found it at a scrap yard for $350, unknown mileage. My only complaint is that the driver side timing cover is broke. When I set the crank notch at 12 o'clock, the driver side cam never really looks like the notch is at 12 o'clock.

I'm sure the dealership will make me wait for new covers :(

some folks don't use covers.

i never replace the little gaskets for the covers.

if it is just cracked, i'd reinstall it.

but wait if you like.

the driver side can look a little off sometimes.

the question you need to ask is,

would it be closer or farther from right if you moved it a tooth.

the other thing you could do is count the teeth on the belt,

from crank timing mark to driver cam timing mark.

i don't know the number off hand,

but it is something and a half teeth, (xx.5, maybe 44.5 or 41.5, i forget)

good luck.

Well, it's the rear cover that is cracked, and it has the notch in it. But, if my gates belt has the correct marks on it, it really shouldn't matter I would think.

I'll order the covers, but that wont stop me from driving it a few days :)
