'07 Outback GT automatic - what to look for?

You need to be sure the timing belt has been changed, along with that a thorough pre purchase inspection from an experienced subaru mechanic to include a compression and leak down test. Aside from that a thorough test drive enough to set 2-3 drive cycles, meaning drive for 10-15 min stop shut it down act like your checking the oil or something then fire it up and drive another 10-15 min and see if any CELs pop up.

The engine should be smooth and relatively quiet some slight ticking is normal for the ej engine because of the mechanical valvetrain. Should have plenty of oomph although I do recall some 4thgen owners complaining about the gearing with the 5eat being too high.

Transmission shifting should be smooth in drive and a bit firmer in sport mode. If you floor it from a stop it should pull hard not feel like the engine is just making noise but the car is not going anywhere. Slipping is a known issue with the 5eat especially with more than stock power, so if someone was running it at stage 3 say or really hard at stage 2 you could be looking at a trans rebuild or replacement.
