Winesalot
On my 95 Legacy 2.2L Auto Sedan we have been having to add quite a bit of brake fluid. We also have had lots of problems with the anti lock brakes releasing break pressure on one or more wheels even under mild braking events. At this point the fuse has been pulled on the anti lock brakes because they were getting dangerous. When my daughter took the car to her local mechanic (she is at college 6 hours away from me) they told her the brake master cylinder was leaking fluid in to the brake booster. There is no evedence of this what so ever. The fluid is leaking on the anti lock brake unit itself. Picture below. My questions are: Can the fluid leak be fixed or should I find a replacement anti lock brake manifold and, once fixed or replaced do you think this will solve the anti lock brake release problem? (Please don't suggest I somehow remove the anti lock system entirely. My 19 year old daughter who goes to college in a snowy/icy town and her highly protective mother will never sign off on that. The whole reason for this car is the awd and anti lock brakes.) http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/SilverBellWinery/anti%20lock%201.jpg http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd499/SilverBellWinery/anti%20lock%202.jpg
Osei
Probably one or more fittings have developed pinholes. You need to find out which and replace those lines. There may be enough room to cut and flare the fittings, but a closer exam will tell you. O.

It is on the anti lock brake 'modulator' (I think that is what it is called)
Osei
Replace with a junk yard unit. Make sure it has oil in it, take it to someone who can bleed it once it is installed. O.

Winesalot
I have a complete ABS unit out of my 97 OB for sale It has the exact part number shown in my original post, is fully functional, and has no leaks? If so, how much?

Winesalot
Success!!! I found a replacement modulator assembly at a local wrecking yard for $75 and installed it so the leak is gone. However, the problem I was experiencing with the anti lock breaks releasing brake pressure under normal braking conditions is still happening. I called the Subaru dealer and they said their computer can only diagnose if there is a fault code and the abs warning light is on, which it is not. This is a problem. subieadam
Might want to check the ABS sensors at each wheel, clean off the magnetic tips as they sometimes get cluttered with junk that could interfere with the signal it sends to the ECU. Winesalot
Entire brake system has been fully and thoroughly bled.
Osei
Bleeding the brake system does not bleed the abs unit. It is separate. This is why I stated in an earlier post to take the unit to someone who can bleed it upon purchase. There may be an online procedure that can help. Try a Google search. O. RustyRuu
I had this problem with one of my subarus it had rear drum brakes. That's where the abs would kick off on certain braking events, in the rear. I pulled the drums, had tons of built up dust, brake cleaned the sensor and where it picks up the signal on the spindle. I'd say one can per brake, get those suckers clean, its worth a shot and cheap maintenance if it doesn't work .
