billvegaschris
1996 Subaru Legacy LSI 206k miles drove it home last night and all was well got up this morning to start the car and as i started it I heard this grinding noise so I shut it off looked under the hood and did not notice anything out of place started it again...it still was grinding but started up shut it off and then started it again and the grinding was really loud this time so I shut it down Any ideas? Maybe the starter? (has original starter) thanks
twisty
does it continue to grind after it is running? hard to say anything about it without hearing the grind, and knowing how it is operating
johnegg
a clack clack grinding or more of a screech like grinding. it may be the toothed idler bearing for ther timing belt. i would visually check it before you do some real damage. idler, T-belt or water pump failure will likely cause valve damage, $$$$. how old is the timing belt and all of the other components.? billvegaschris
So i replaced the starter and that was not it. I had my wife start it and the gridning is coming from the front where the timing belt is. The timing belt is not moving at all.I have replaced that maybe 18 months ago. Not sure where to go from here? Could it be a bearing ?
twisty
if timing belt isnt moving, the grinding is probably a busted idler in there. going to have to pull the cases and find out which one went, then redo the timing completely (all idlers and components this time) and hope no valve damage occurred.
