Derrickmd30
I wanted to know if the motor has to come out to do headgaskets? Have a 97 subaru legacy gt dohc and it's leaking oil and internal coolant leaking. Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalk
johnegg
not absolutely, but the risk of having to re-do the job goes way up if you do them in the car. plus, you have to lift the engine several inches, or move to one side and then the other, to get the head bolts to clear the frame rails. i have only pulled suabru engines, but they tell me that that suabrus are easier than most others. some can do it in a couple of hours. most shop can pull and re-install in a day 6 - 8 hrs. andrew_desha
When I worked at Subaru a lot of the mechanics could do both head gaskets in 4 hours. They would disconnect the motor mounts and tranny. then jack up one side of the motor and do that head gasket and then do the other side the same way. They angle up and make it pretty easy to work on. Just make sure you pay attention to wire harnesses when moving the motor.
Derrickmd30
Yeah I have a jack but no hoist to pull the motor out. So it's in the back yard with a jack and ramps style job. Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalk
