GeorgerinNH
1998 Legacy Outback 2.5L with 247,000 miles, manual transmission. A month or so ago it started as a little cough during the first few cranks, but now has progressed into a full on booger blowing sneeze (thats the best way I can describe it, kind of a high pitched coughing sound). Right now it is just barely making it past those first few cranks, but once it does, she fires right up and runs fine. It hasn't failed to start yet, but I have started to park only on hills, just in case. Does this sound like a starter problem, perhaps the starter clutch starting to slip? hornarj
Have you had the battery checked? You'll want to check both voltage & cold cranking amps. Also check the battery connections for both poles. They should both be clean and free from corrosion. Verify the connection on the starter is tight & clean as well. Do the same inspection on the ground wire too. If these are all good then you can have an auto parts store check the starter. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
GeorgerinNH
Problem was a bad bendix in the starter. Replaced the entire starter (2 bolts, 10 minutes) and off she went.
