bjkroll
So I've had a 2.2 sitting on a stand for about 8 months now, and with the temperature rising.. it needs to go back in my Subaru. I'm running a 2.5 right now, but I know it has issues. Needs the timing done, new head gaskets, etc etc. I loved the 2.2, the only reason its sitting on a stand is because the car was totaled, and I wanted to save the engine / trans (and a few other good components). Anyways, to get to the point, what should I really do to this motor before I put it back in? Since its already out should I bother with new head gaskets? Do they ever go bad on the 2.2? I was thinking of doing the valve cover gasket/seal, cam seal, and oil separator plate. Should I tinker with the rear main seal, or just leave it be if its not leaking? Obviously, I'll be doing the timing belt, all pulleys, and the water pump. Also a new hydraulic tensioner. Am I forgetting anything? Any input is appreciated! Thanks! bjkroll
1997. Unknown miles. Pulled from a junkyard, who claimed it was a 2.5L, when in fact it was a 2.2. The trans is a 4EAT, rebuilt by Subaru in 2007. Works great. AWD works. No torque bind. Thats going in when I put the 2.2 back in.

johnegg
97 is an interference engine. you should do the following before install: t-belt all idlers idler for the tensioner, not the piston unless damaged water pump cam seals and cam cap o-rings crank seal oil pump o-ring reseal oil pump check screws on the back of the oil pump oil separator plate on the back of the block if not a metal one plugs plug wires valve cover gaskets parts cost for the above about $250. this sounds like a lot but you will be set for 60k trouble free miles. t-belt kit online w/ water pump = $135 shipped, amazon oil seals $30 at dealer online plug wires $40 at dealer online oil sep plate w/ screws $35 at dealer online order all 3 at one time. all oil seals from subaru. plug wires from suabru oil separator plate w/ screws from suabru other parts, oil and coolant from local or online parts store.
