RJ255's Lighting Mods Thread!

Recommended Posts

Okay everyone, while the LGT is down for a rebuild....I have an extra set of lights that I purchased to work on (thanks to Mike, BagheeraLGT). I also have pulled some interior lights. I'll be starting a whole slew of modifications for the lighting in this car so I figured I would document here.

Current Plans:

-RX330 OEM HID projectors (AFS version) w/custom shields and TSX-R Lenses retrofitted in the low beam spot + CBI D2S bulbs & OEM Denso Ballasts with custom low beam harness

-Gloss black painted housings with chrome tip

-H3 3000k HID bulbs for the fogs....also planning to try to pop the lenses open and see if I can paint them and possibly swap the projector lenses.

-Triton V3 turn signal bulbs

-Nichia 5mm LEDs (Japanese LEDs, from the inventor of the white and blue leds, best of the best for low power LEDs) that will be going in the following places:

-Plate Lights

-Map Lights

-Dome Light

-Courtesy Coor Lights

-Trunk Light

-Clear Strip in the headlights

-HIR1/9011 bulbs for the high beams OR a high beam projector in the high beam spot (would take a lot of work to fit anything) to achieve a quad look.

-Tail light LED retrofit might happen in the future

-High-Power LED reverse lights (Most likely Cree LEDs)

Updates & teaser pics to come soon!

Got some work done on the dome light the other day, decided to go with 9 nichia leds (running at around 50 mA per LED, ~20 lumens each). I plastidipped the board for better appearance when the lens is on ( the breadboard is orange originally)....shotty job but it wont matter when the lens cover is on. I still need to secure the board to the housing with some epoxy, but otherwise it's mostly done. I'll let the pictures tell the rest....both output pics have the same exposure setting, first is stock, second is LED:

I got work done on the map lights (6 nichia LEDs in each) and on the retrofit. Projectors are tuned and 90% aligned, just awaiting paint and LED work to be done. I'll try and post some pictures tonight.

Would they fit though? The USDM lights are NAL and JDMs are Koito and I'm not sure if they would have the same fitment (screws, tabs, etc). You'd also lose the parking light in the side strip, USDM doesnt have them and I'm in the process of modifying mine to fit an led board.

Take a picture of the back of your lens. I'll snap a few of mine. I know I'll lose the parking light thingy. I plan on doing something custom over there so I'll be cutting them out anyways and figured someone might want these since they already have the provisions for the parking lights. They should screw in the same.

Looks the same as mine.

If I have to cut the shrouds up I guess that's ok. I would just prefer not to since I'm sure someone wants everything pre-done. Honestly I could send you one of mine if you want to just check to be sure, that is if you want them.

Bumping this thread back from the dead. Made a fair amount of progress on the headlamps. But I'll briefly walk through the modifications. One light is sealed up and just awaiting final wiring. The other is ready to be sealed.

For the retrofit, I used the original projector shield/mounting plate as a template for a bracket to mount the RX330 projectors with. I used 22 gauge plain steel for the new brackets, as well as some careful measurements and cutting/drilling.

To mount the bracket to the projector itself, I actually just sandwiched it int between the front and rear of the projector. Worked perfectly. Also needed to trim the headlamp brackets so that the projector would fit, and also trimmed the projector because there was some interference with the front bezel/shroud.

Originally I planned to use TSX-Rs as my clear lens option, but decided to go for OEM S2000 clear lenses (AP1). They had better fitment, similar clarity, and OEM braggin rights. No brainer! Tuned them up and made minor adjustments to the projector setup to ensure they would be aimed correctly. The best thing about bracket option was that I could easily take the projector out for cleaning/adjustments and then remount in seconds. I also didn't need to epoxy anything.

As for the front bezel, I originally planned on a gloss black finish and retaining a chrome projector ring. But the chrome started rubbing off during cleaning with a microfiber cloth, so I decided to change it up a bit. Decided to go for black with a graphite gray metallic projector ring, full gloss. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

For the clear strip on the side of the lights, I built fully custom LED boards with Nichia LEDs runnning from end to end on each light. 47 LEDs per side, running at about 60-70mA per LED. My calculations say about 800-900 lumens per side....more than enough for a DRL hahah. To power the setup, I decided to build a custom harness with a relay, and two control boxes. The control boxes are setup for 3 functions. 1) to regulate the LED boards and ensure constant voltage (with a voltage regulator) 2) to dim the LEDs when the parking lights and/or headlights or on (with PWM) 3) to turn the LED boards off when the turn signal is on, with a switchback function (with a relay and capacitor). All done with pretty simple and inexpensive components. I was super happy to see that the LEDs were a near perfect match for the CBI bulbs in the RX330s.

For the turn signals, I used some AFspec 30w P/R Amber 3156 bulbs. I'm cutting out the parking/dim function so I didn't need 3157s. These bulbs were really nice, but the focal point wasn't quite right, so I spaced the sockets back a few milimeters and I'll find some way to seal them.

For the high beam, I acquired some Philips 9011 for a great price, and trimmed them to fit in the 9005 holder.

Mounting the projectors was pretty easy once I had fabricated the custom brackets. They just screwed in using the original hardware. They just needed some extra trimming for clearance and minor adjustments with some washers.
