Sparkplugs too clean? Coolant Leakage?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I just pulled my plugs (standard NGK not plat or iridium) from a Subaru powered vanagon which I had purchased about a month ago. My engine is a 1991 EJ22 from a Legacy. My plugs, which are about 2 years old, seemed a little too clean, electrodes slightly rounded but the tips were a very light ash grey and the white porcelin around electrode is very clean which has me thinking that engine might have some coolant leakage into chambers? What are the various ways that coolant can leak into the chamber on a EJ22 if this is the case? Any pics of what a perfectly clean plug looks like from an engine that is not leaking coolant? Am I being completely paranoid here? I will be spending some time in the next few days trying to determine if in fact I have some combustion chamber leakage. Oil drain revealed brown fluid, coolant appears to be free of oil. How common is coolant migration in these EJ22's? I was just very surprised to see plugs looking like this. Previous owner did report previous overheating episode in the past - topend was done at some point in the past - is retorqueing advised on these engines? Thanks again! Oh, we did just drive about 800 miles recently in a day, no overheating, no oil consumption which made me quite happy, thanks again!
