Was this the one in downtown Phoenix? If so, I was going to buy it before the guy told me I had to beat $750 it if wanted it. It's all cool. I ended up buying a 99 for $400 from a guy in North Phoenix. Runs/Drives, needs a little bit of body work but nothing I can't handle.

Yea it is that car. You paid $400 for a running and driving 99! He must of been in hurry that's a practically junk yard a offer. good deal. And welcome to the club.

Ya his apartment complex was putting pressure on him for having a car that wasn't registered, so he made a deal to just get rid of it. It's not completely driving, it needs a core support and radiator to be drivable, but I drove it onto the trailer and off back at my house. Looks like we both got good deals on our cars. Thanks for the welcome and hope to be able to connect with other "local" Subaru members.

where the hell did you see either of these listed? my son and i have been watching the local CL for them constantly, the lowest one i saw pop up in months was for 1550 and that needed a ton of work.

Whats up AZ locals!!! Queen Creek here! Only been in town for a month tho. from Albuquerque

than he isn't searching right or something. set your max price lower maybe? I believe in west phoenix there is a perfectly running 1996 5 speed sedan for $1000 obo, its a FWD one tho... and Downtown there is a 95 auto trans AWD for $700. not going into gear. If your having trouble finding them I could send you links.

my bad its a 5 speed. I had this issue before and turns out i snapped 2 shiftier forks. I went to my you pull and pay in ABQ and found a transmission from a wrecked wagon. with only 97,000 miles. paid $125 for it. there is a few transmissions that will work in these. my current 97 tranny does not match whats on my vin plate.

Ya I set my max price at 1000 and lowest price to 100 to weed out those no price ones or ones that advertise $15 and really want $15,000 for it. You have to be quick in Phoenix as all the low priced fixable ones are snatched up quick, just like our two.

I've heard it's easier to remove the engine to replace the clutch, true? I plan on replacing the clutch, timing belt, water pump, and pulleys (250k miles), and redo the gaskets on the motor as there are some small leaks with the power steering reservoir.

How easy is it to pull that small motor? I see the transmission takes up half of the engine bay.

On lots of cars yes. On subis no, tho i have never looked at instructions i just go at it and works well for me. And on most rwd cars no. on lots front wheel drive cars yes or at least an engine hoist to hold the engine. But not all. Depends if the tranny your trying to pull is behind the engine or on the side, for instance an Accord. But on most cars If you have a lift its usually pretty easy to drop "not pull engines" With the entire sub frames/ engine cradle. lots of engines now must be dropped and pulling is impossible.

Pulling or dropping my engine would require me to unplug and disconnect everything. Including antifreeze and free-on. But for the most part compared to most cars. Subi's are cake work. At least for me a 2nd nature. Both my cars have a leaky P/S. I'm going to experiment with rtv tomorrow instead of the $30 rebuild kit.

If you need help let me know. I'm a lot cheaper than a shop.

you can pull a subi motor pretty quickly without disconnecting the whole harness, there is 3 main connectors for the engine harness on the side that you can disconnect, then pull the whole thing minus a few wires and some vacuum. that said, i still pull the trans, but i have access to a lift and shop tools to make that much easier. just did a clutch a few weeks ago on a 2001 forester, first time id ever seen a pressure plate broken in 3 pieces.

and ya, im probably not filtering out enough to see the good ones, i usually have the top price set at 2200 and lower at 400, and by owner only. ive been searching for a 95ish 5mt awd donor car to use as a parts car for my fwd 4eat wagon, but unfortunately my son as caused my car budget to disappear for a few months. so, sucks for me.

you can see the three connectors on the left side of the pic hanging down by the bell housing. you can also see the ac system is intact and charged i think

edit: i pulled the compressor to replace some pieces and fix a leak, i forgot. it was still in when i yanked the motor tho.

I was reading the same thing that you're saying about pulling the engine. The instructions I found on another forum said to drain and remove the radiator, unbolt the top transmission bolts and motor mounts, unbolt the AC Compressor and PS Pump and put it off to the side, disconnect the three main harness wires and a ground strap, go underneath, detach the final two transmission bolts from the bottom and have your engine hoist ready to pull it up. They said the whole job can be done in about 2 1/2 hours for the auto transmission and about an hour and a half with the manual.

SoSubi, what part of Phoenix do you live. I know a lot of them around Phoenix. I've lived in North Phoenix, Scottsdale, Avondale, Glendale, Surprise, and Buckeye.

Twisty, if you're not opposed to a small road trip, there is a decent RHD Legacy here in Prescott. It runs and drives too for $1000. I would have looked into getting it except I wanted a manual tranny and this is an automatic.

queen creek. At least I know they exist here now, There is some county's in New Mexico where even washing your car at home is illegal due to water consumption laws. Really I just want to fill up a 5 gallon bucket with degreaser.

About pulling the engine. Expect it to take longer. That times gotta be with a lift. And be careful removing free-on. If you pull a pressurized line It will shoot out super cold and toxic r134. I'm pretty sure its illegal to not properly recycle your free-on. Tho If you do remove your free-on at home a good way is to put a pebble in the caps that cover your valves. put the cap back on and the pebble will press the valve and free-on will slowly leak out. Don't even stand near your car while its draining.

I'm pretty sure the Freon was expelled during the loving encounter with the wall. I have an engine hoist and a stand already. I have a lot of friends from Canada who are huge Subaru fans and say you can pretty much take the engine out, do your work on it, and have it back in and down the road in less than 12 hours with a hoist, stand, and some jack stands. As far as car washing goes, there are no restrictions unless they declare a county-wide excessive water usage ban (no washing cars, watering lawns, etc) but that only happens in the summer months, like July/August, when the temps are around 115 and the lake levels are super low. In the winter, you're fine with washing your car at home. The do-it-yourselfers are a good way to go if you want to pressure wash the engine bay. Just find a small shady looking one with not many people at it, roll up, douse the engine in degreaser, then blast away. There is one here in Prescott I use and the attendant doesn't really care as long as I'm not dumping oil or antifreeze down the drains. The closest one to you is going to be at Riggs and St. Andrews Blvd. I thinks it's the Kelly Family Self Serve Wash or something. They have a few bays.
