Is it the alternator

Recommended Posts

Jumped in the car a bit ago and had to come home. I saw two dash lights illuminated:

1. Battery icon illuminated

2. Red Brake word was illuminated

I opened the hood and thought I might see a broken belt but nope, it is good.

There was a faint electrical smell

There was also a noise that didn't sound normal -- kind of a ziiiing. That is the best I can do with the sound.

I put the meter on the battery and it is charging at 12.8 > 12.9 at idle.

I feel it should be in the 13 range at idle. It goes to 13 when I rev the engine.

To me it seems that the alternator is giving up the ghost?????

Have the battery tested at AutoZone/Advanced Auto. It is free. They can also check alternators I believe.

If you have a screeching or metallic grinding noise, that is likely the alternator bearing, but it could be the timing belt tensioner or idler noise as well.

If it is the alternator, DIY repair. It's so easy. If you plan on keeping the car a long time, find a higher quality unit than the AutoZone ones unless they have a lifetime warranty.

The noise it was making, the low charge rate, therefore I just went and bought a new alt.

Installed it and now everything is 100%.

I love when the alt is up top because I can do the job in my Sunday best clothes.

under 13 at idle is too low. id likely pull the alt and have it tested
