medfordhotrodguy
I have a 98 LGTw 187k on the clock, my cats are starting to smell and are pretty rusted. I'm looking to see what others have done: replaced with an OEM direct fit cat (Walker or Magnaflow), had a custom setup made, or just throw them away (I can't do this 1)? Include part #'s if you can. Thanks Jeff
johnegg
until they fail completely, rust though, fail an emissions test, i would leave them alone. i have never heard of an after market cat that works as well or lasts as long and the suabru factory cat. if you need to replace, i would look for a private seller who has used subaru cats for sale. unless you can afford new suabru cats. subaru cats usually last the life of the car. although i just had to replace mine on my 98 outback, but it went into salt water at a boat ramp, and they rusted out. i have also had to replace the ECU, brakes and the entire exhaust. diesel2wd
I am also interested in an answer to this question but I have my own issue. the used car guy I bought my brighton wagon from had someone come in one night and cut off the cats from a bunch of his vehicles. my car was one of them, I've had it almost 3 years, NEVER getting rid of it until the shells rots from around drivetrain. but before he sold it to me, he had an aftermarket one put on. it smells horrible. getting a CEL once in awhile for an o2 sensor. replaced both o2 sensors, fuel filter, air filter. I WANT the boxer rumble. also my header is about due for replacement. have around $300 right now. I can weld in stuff myself just need to know what to look for. johnegg
if you convert a spark plug anti-fouler into a spacer, you can run without a cat. the rear sensor just checks to see if the cat is working. if you use a spacer to move it out of the exhaust stream, you do not need cats. i think one guy even passed an emissions sniffer test with no cats. but i would not count on that. the front o2 MUST be very high quality, subaru or better. a cheap o2 sensor on the front can cause a CEL. the rear can be cheap.
