Denunzio36
Need some help here folks. I'm replacing the ball joints on my 2000 Legacy GT, and after FINALLY getting them out, I'm not sure if the housing in the knuckle is good. Based on the design of the ball joint housing on the knuckle (pinch design), isn't there supposed to be a protruding ring on the inside of the ball joint hole in the knuckle? The ball joint has a groove around the base, which I'd assume mates with a ring in the hole. Well, after I removed mine, the walls on the ball joint hole are 100% flush... No protruding ring that mates with the ball joint. My question is... Is this normal? Do I need new knuckles?!

987687
Looks pretty normal to me. Clean it up with some sandpaper. Use anti-seize so maybe it doesn't stick so much next time (it'll still stick...), and torque it down. The pinch bolt goes in the groove of the balljoint keeping it from falling out. It also squeezes the housing closed around the joint to hold it in place.
Denunzio36
Good point about the bolt locking in the groove. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
