2.2 into 97 Outback - how do I

Recommended Posts

I am narrowing down my options. I have found that the going rate to install and engine into the 97 Outback is $300. Two quotes for $200.

Just got off the phone with a guy I used years ago with a subaru we owned and he was always a trustworthy guy. He has even done the 2.2 install into what was previously a 2.5. He said the three hole exhaust is an important thing to look for on the 2.2.

  1. Do you need to change ECU?
  2. Is the three hole exhaust the important part
  3. Do I need the flexplate off my 2.5?

I can get a 2.2 for about $300. Loose those extra 35 horses but for a 2.2 non-interference engine I'll say bye bye horses.

Anything else I should look for?
