to tint or not to tint?

Recommended Posts

You can actually but precut window tint on ebay. I bought a kit for my old 96 L and did it myself. The kit was like $40 with the tools to install it. It turned out good for my first time doing tint. One suggestion, if you do the tint yourself make sure when you clean the windows don't use a towel or paper towel to dry the windows. Just use a squeegee because everything else will leave tiny particles on the glass that will then cause little bubbles in the tint. With my 99lgt I'll probably just do 35% because our laws suck and I'll just pay a shop to do it.

while i do know howto tint, and have helped out at my friends tint shop, id rather pay his guy to tint my car than do it myself. my wagon has 16 on front and 4 around the back. i love it. my truck is the same way, and the GT is 35/16. legal here is 35% front windows, dark as you want around the back. i dont have many issues with seeing at night tho,i may be used to it tho since ive had 4% on the backs of all my vehicles since about 1992

Got a quote today from a local shop......350

I think ill give it a shot myself or wait and see what my new paychecks will look like after I start at nissan

That's way too high, dude. I paid in the low $200s for mine and some people (like bobo) have paid under $200. Try a different shop!

definitely too high. these wagons have a lot of glass to cover, but really they are fairly easy to tint. the hatch is the hardest part, the sides are all flat and easily accessible. if a shop quotes more than 240 for it they just dont want the job.

When I had mine done, I had it done at an auto glass shop with a great reputation that has been in my community for a long time. It cost somewhere around $300 to have my Volvo wagon done. Working at a used car dealership, you see sooo many of these cheap tint jobs five years down the road and they look awful. I took my Subaru to a cheap place in Spokane to have one window tinted. (cheap tint PO had put on fell off drivers window). I had multiple issues with recurring bubbles due to the poor install. I wouldn't want someone doing a hack job on my glass again.

TL;DR: Don't go somewhere because they are the cheapest. Go to the place with the best reputation and authentic reviews. If it's to expensive, save more money because being cheap with tint doesn't pay off in the end.

Also to answer questions about visibility, here's some comparisons between 35% (top) and 18% (bottom). Film is carbon suntek

theres a definite difference between "too expensive" and "decent price for a good job" as well, tho. any shop that thinks these wagons are hard enough to tint and charges 300 and up are not giving you a fair price for the job requested. same as the guys that are underbidding it at 150.

Well, the weather was good enough to tint today, so I started the forester finally. Turns out, tint from http://www.precutautotint.com/www.precuttint.com is NOT full coverage as they told me it was. The back window piece didn't conform to the corners and left a gap, so it test fit side window and there was gap around all sides plus the corners didn't match well.

Back to drawing board. I like the idea of precut tint, but that's 0 for 2 on cut quality. I might have to go back to cutting it myself, which sucks.
