1999 Legacy GT

Recommended Posts

So I finally got around to doing this.

I filmed this video with a Nikon D7000 and edited it with photoshop CS6

I know my Leggy is a little beat up but I drive her hard and she likes it.

I got a little bit done to her mostly exhaust intake and some fuel and ignition system things but I have a lot of plans. This video is a before and I will start a thread for the build once I really get started sadly money is slow to come in but I should have my wheels by end of summer as well as coil overs and hopefully a beautiful new paint job. Through the winter I will be sourcing a 04 STI motor and hopefully building it inside and out to handle around 600hp or as much as possible but I really dont want over 350-400hp I think that is reasonable. I just want well built and strong enough while running quite a bit under what its capable of for power. Keep it reliable and street-able you know. Then next summer I will take her off the road and drop the motor in.

Well that is all for now enjoy

Thank you I think I spent about an hour filming and editing it. I don't think I have any pictures of the interior right now Ill try and get some tomorrow. My Ex has an 09 legacy with the auto transmission and it should be the same Subaru has been using the 4eat for ages. I honestly don't know much about the automatic though. I refuse to drive an auto as my own car so mine is a stick. The only problem I have is a little clutch chatter and failed shifter bushings but that will be all corrected when I do the motor swap.

Do you think its worth buying a 99' Legacy GT 30th Aniversarry, automatic tranny with 180k miles for $2500?

How many more miles do you think i could get out the engine before it just fails?

also im pretty sure the common headgasket problem was already repaired/fixed somewhere down the line since the vehicle has 180k miles on it?

I would agree if it runs strong at those miles the head gasket issue was repaired. I think if the paint and interior are good I would probably buy it. I am stingy though I would probably try and talk the person down to $2000. Its not uncommon to see Subarus in the 200k+ range. As for auto there is a mod to make the 4EAT full time 4x4 which you cant do on the stick. I do fully expect to break 200k and then some on this motor maybe 250 before I do the STI swap. Even after I am going to hold on to it once I do the STI swap to have it around for parts or back up motor just rebuild it in my spare time maybe pick up another legacy to drop it in. I am personally a huge fan of the Legacy GT I am sad then dont make it anymore. I used to have an Impreza L 2.2 coupe with a stick that had well over 200k I think 240k ish when I sold it still running to this day just not in my possession its a 2.2 though I believe they last longer no head gasket issues.

Can you tell me more about the full time 4x4? I'd like to read more info on that.

Also, how can I tell if the timing belt is worn/old? (I'm not to car savy) but I have i wanna work on my next car myself thats for sure and learn a few things. Do you think this would be a car to do that?

I was always scared to work on my car because what if I mess up and do something totally wrong lol.

Here is a like to the 4x4 mod it forces the center diff to run full time 50/50 split I know this is for an impreza but they are the same transmission.

http://www.rs25.com/forums/f8/t99075-4eat-diff-lock-switch-handbrake-mod-torquemada-lite.html

Timing belt is similar to any other belt you want to look for cracks or wear anything that looks like it might have been rubbed against something badly I am not sure you can easily look at the timing belt with out taking the other belts off. My car the timing belt was replaced right before I got it and they left the timing belt covers off so I can see it easily.

Here is a video explaining a little on what a bad timing belt might look like

Here is a video that is pretty comprehensive on replacing the belt I think there are 2 parts this guy is pretty good and the 2.2l that he is doing the timing belt is the same process on the 2.5 in the GT slightly different timing marks but very close process.

Easy to work on I think mid to late 90s Hondas are the easiest cars personally best for people to learn to repair cars on cause they are simple. Subaru's falling in second but that's my personal opinion some people hate working on Subarus. I find that most everything is fairly accessible on Subarus that's why I like working on them and parts typically are not crazy expensive.

I have been reading and learning on this forum for years about subarus there is this forum and several others I dont hesitate to look at impreza forums either for engine stuff because the motors are so close if I cant find the information on one I can find it on another and I never bring my car to a shop unless its welding or tires.
