Whitetiger's 2013 MX-5 Club SCCA STR build

Recommended Posts

As some of you may know, I sold my Legacy GT at the beginning of last year and picked up a new 2013 Mazda MX-5 Club Edition soft top to be my Autox duty car. This year I moved in the Street Touring Roadster class which is gonna be one of the most competitive classes out there.

I still miss the GT but it was time to move on.

Here it is the day i picked it up.

For 2013, I competed in C-Stock Road Tire RWD. this required some tire upgrades. 225/45/17 BFG geforce Rivals. Also added were Koni yellow shocks, and a 28mm progress front swaybar.

MX-5 stock springs are so soft. with a stiff front part you get a wheel in the air.

And here we are at the 2013 NJ SCCA ProSolo event.

about 3/4 of the way though the season i had over 300 runs on the tires as i went to as may events as i possibly could. I ended up wearing the tread off the tires.

So the only cure for too much racing is to buy more tires.

Towards the end of last season i was finally able to get some Professional number magnets.

At the end of the season, i reached the limits of what the car can do in stock form, plus with a rules change for the 2014 season, and in the interests of having fun i decide to move to the Street Touring Roadster class.

First thing's first with street touring, Coilovers.

I decided on MCS double adjustable internals with 550F/350R Hyperco springs. Vorshlag had them custom valved for me. They are an awesome company. If you want real suspension, give them a call.

Next, whiteline offset bushings for the front upper control arms

For power, Long tube headers and Ecutek

Racerom for Ecutek is out now so with the tune i get Launch control, flat foot shifting, auto blip downshifting and on the fly map switching using the cruse control buttons.

Went to go get aligned and corner balanced at AZP installs

Looking good!

We brought home a '13 Club last week as a new DD for the wife. It won't be doing any AutoX, but should see a trackday or two.

How much of a fender roll did you need with the C3s?

more about the tire than the rim. on the C3's i have my old Rivals from last season which are 225/45/17. i probably did not need a roll for them. I also have a set of 245/40/17 on 17x9 enkei PF01's and an old set of 245/35/18 kumho v710's on 18x8.5 which would need a roll. I rolled the real fender lips flat an plan to do the same in the front.

Thx. I'm looking at 235/40-17 on 17x8 or 9, with progress springs. I still have a while to make a decision... I actually really like the look of the stock rims on the Club, just wish they were 8"...

yeah. take a look at the enkei PF01. they look great on the car. it you want a good selection of wider wheels, tirerack has a special STR category for the MX-5 on the 2007 year only. all the listed rims are 17x9 and most dont show up normally under any other model year.

the video above showcased some of the nice features of the ECUTeK RaceRom tune. Launch control, flat foot shifting, and auto-blip on downshifts. At around 0:47 in the vid, I flat foot shifted to 3rd and then auto-blip back to 2nd moments later.
