Ice Wagon
Hey guys, bad news, subaru is currently out of commission. Zero transportation to work. If someone has a cable 5mt with 4.11 final drive I'd be interested Was about to go run errands in the subaru, let it warm up up, got about 100ft and it popped out of 3rd and now it wont go into any gear, it has never popped out of 3rd before but it recently started popping out of 4th as well as reverse. When I push the clutch pedal all the way in there is a noise from the trans and there was never any clutch smell. My clutch cable bracket had moved, i guess only one bolt was in there, fixed that, still nothing, tried putting it in gear while engine off and nothing happened either, while tryin the gears i heard a few sound like the were almost in gear when the engine was running but no cigar http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/20140317_135526.jpg If you investigate you'll see my clutch cable bracket bent and moved as there was only 1 bolt in it ever since we did the clutch http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/20140317_143830.jpg What I believe is the culprit of my transmission misfortunes http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/20140317_135548.jpgTowed it with my dads kia around the block into the alley, then we pushed her into the garage http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/20140317_135601.jpgShe doesn't get cleaned much http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140313_084837.jpgDay or 2 before the trans went out, grabbing another battery terminal http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140313_090108.jpg
Ice Wagon
I'm unaware if anyone even looks at this but if you have you know the Liftaru is out of commission in my garage, I started getting the engine ready to come out so I can have a look at the clutch and if the clutch is oK I'm pulling the trans out. After some craigslist browsing I found another '96 Legoback Wagon that was 100% stock but unfortunately its a 2.5 auto...however I am a broke as f#$% 18 year old and it just so happens to cost $450 and all it needs is some engine work to be back on the road, I think I will acquire that and proceed from there. I haven't really shown in picture the extent of the damage this poor old girl has so I took a picture of every noticeable imperfection...as well as some other random pictures. http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174009.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174022.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174033.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174051.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174051.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174117.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174141.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174158.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174202.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174210.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174210.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174222.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174230.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174244.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174249.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174300.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174312.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140325_174319.jpg

dustinsonger
honestly man, and i know i'm not the only one, we have all been there with a car that is too far gone but cant let go of, but really you should start seriously considering the danger that car puts you and the members of your community in. you have extensive weakening of integral parts of your chassis from both horrible past modification as well as extensive rusting. On top of that you have the extra load of the huge tires. All of the problems you have talked about are very related to that fact. The weight of your rotating parts put load on all other rotating parts in the car, and this car was not ever designed to take the loads from those extremely heavy rims and tires, nor were your hubs designed to hold up your cars weight with the such large wheel spacers and low offset wheels. Your transmission is giving up gear by gear due to the extra load each tooth has to take from all of the load, as well as your synchros i would assume are under extremely out of spec loads, your engine is also probably dealing with heavy over loading and your ecu may be flipping out cutting your revs from that. Or it could be a multitude of other reasons, random welds and breaks all over the chassis and broken e brake cables should tell you many other things are even worse where you cant see easily. Cheap cars are fun, especially when your young, like i said we have all been there but you have to look at it from the outside, not even taking into consideration how much crap your brakes are going through to stop that thing you could easily lose a wheel from what i have seen here and forget the danger that puts you in, what if that happens while your driving next to a minivan with children in it? I grew up in Wyoming so i know how driving on roads like that is precarious as it is, just imagine you running a car with a family in it off the road and into a ditch. I would take a second to find a car with a much better shape chassis and engine and maybe work in the modifications you want from there
Ice Wagon
Liftaru is here to stay, like it or not. I almost know what I'm doing here kinda...haha, really though I'll get everything sorted out. Highschool budget here and my other car is a '49 willys truck that has sat for 30 years Finally was able to borrow a cherry picker to lift its heart out to check some stuff out, as I had thought the center of the clutch disc had detached itself from the rest of it http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140408_150211.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140408_151854.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140409_000416.jpg seller says no returns after 30 days so I will be cleaning up the flywheel and pressure plate and buying another clutch disc, I will be doing the shifter knuckle and bushings soon as well, brakes are gonna get replaced up front and I'm going to be ordering new strut top hats all around to de-lift ASAP
boattlebot
you going to go back to original hight or keep some lift on it?

Ice Wagon
I get paid today! Gonna be ordering a clutch disc for sure and possibly some strut top hats and try for a shifter knuckle. Subaru is waiting in the garage, engine on a stand. The rear cam seals(?)(circle looking things on rear of heads) are leaking and was wondering if it it hard or expensive to fix them while the engine is out. Anyone know what size wrench you need to get the speed sensor off? I feel like it strips easy. http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140408_142055.jpg One of the many many reasons my exhaust sounded like a tractor's http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140408_150211_1.jpg I had a feeling the center of the clutch had broken after I unbolted the trans and I could easily move the engine around, didn't even need to jack the tranny up to pull engine out http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140408_151548.jpg Yep http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140408_151854_1.jpg Had been waiting on a buddy to haul suzy over to lift the engine out, I had unbolted everything and got it ready to pull a week or 2 ago http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140409_120400.jpg I shouldn't have to do this every few months haha http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140411_151922.jpg Waiting for parts http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140411_151941.jpg I wish the front rode this high with the engine in, starting to believe there is some sorta spacer in there but don't know for sure
Ice Wagon
I just ordered a stage 2 clutch disc, a shifter knuckle that I'm not even sure fits but its the only thing that came up on ebay when I searched the part #, brake pads(front) and a little shifter extension just because
Ice Wagon
My car parts slowly arrived and I got the engine back in the car http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140419_201443.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140421_150259.jpg While I was waiting for them I took this beast out for the first time in about a year http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140412_154209.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140412_154454.jpg Bad news, truckin' shift extender wont work without modifying the shift knob and making a new shift boot, so its not happening. The other bad news is my slight suspicion that the shifter knuckle was wrong was correct. So I will be sending it back and buying shifter knuckle from the stealership saturday. http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140422_141659.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140422_141706.jpg She cleans up well http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140422_141517.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140422_141534.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140422_141558.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140422_141723.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140422_213428.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140422_213437.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140422_174156.jpg

Ice Wagon
I hate seeing cars in the junkyard and I feel its a car guys duty to save as many basket cases as possible, so far Ive saved 3 that were headed to the crusher...'90 Jeep XJ, '94 Jeep ZJ v8 and a '84 Bronco 4spd 302 I did the fnront brakes yesterday, took about 2 hours of blood, sweat and tears. Hardest set of brake pads I've ever had to do, everything was either bent, broken or rusted stuck....worth the anguish though the brakes were getting a little on the dangerous side but now work great. I put my "My First Subaru" badge on http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140429_145316.jpg Here are the data plates http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140429_145205.jpg http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140429_145222.jpg and for future use.... http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/Zeekery2233/Mobile%20Uploads/20140428_013602.jpg

Ice Wagon
Got some cosmetic things done so Ruben doesn't look like a POS all the time, got a radiator bracket, radio bezel and the correct shift knuckle from the dealership finally. DaveWilson
Just read through this thread, awesome looking Legacy other than the rusting thats going on. I have a 96 wagon and would love to give it a lift like this... now you've got me thinking hahaha Just a note on your clutch failure.... you said as soon as you unbolted the engine from the transmission you could move it around? Did you still have to pull it forward to disengage the dowel pins? I ask this because I've heard of guys removing their dowel pins completely to make the engine/trans easier to split but that allows the possibility for a pretty bad out-of-alignment between the transmission input shaft and the engine crank. Just wondering if the guy before you yanked those pins out judging by everything else that he took off. If there was a bad alignment it could be why your clutch failed. Did you notice any vibrations that matched engine rpm before your clutch broke? Great looking car! Dave
