Engine re-builder, Bay Area?

unobtainium

Recommended Posts

So I have a cracked ring-land on #2 cylinder (diagnosis thread here: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/diagnosing-misfirei-218345.html?t=218345 )

So far I have two recommendations: RBMS in Hayward and Capitol Subaru in San Jose. Standards at my usual service place in Santa Cruz have slipped to the extent I no longer trust them. Mann Engineering looks cool but they are awful pricey. I plan to have a new stock short block, valves checked out, and since the car has 150k miles on it I will have the turbo replaced at the same time. Build is for strength and longevity; the stock power is good enough for me.

If you have another recommendation, or remarks on how to maximize the rebuild's robustness, please let me know.

i dont trust that mann wants anything to do with non track builds affter talking to them. i am sure that they do a good job but they are out for cash from all ends, and do not have an in-house tuner.

gst has a good reputation, and they do tunes as well

since you have to change the turbo i would get a vf52 they are more reliable and cost the same, you should get a tune anyways so it will help out.

Have a talk with Paul at FW (Fallen Warrior) Motorsports up in Roseville. Travis at Snail Performance is right next door.

I did not know that, thanks. Must be a new development as I was just there a couple months ago.

Things changed. GST rebuilt my engine and tuned it. Break-in miles are done. The engine has a fatter mid-range and the car's much more driveable than before. Expensive, but this last weekend I drove to Ukiah. Corners on Orr Springs Rd that were first gear are now second gear. The driving experience is much more relaxed, yet pressing down on the pedal gives better results than stock ever did.

Thanks for the recommendations.
