KeithMock
Going to do the timing belt on my 06 Outback. Been digging around on the posts here and it looks pretty straight forward. My only question/concern is how do I know the crank pulley is correctly indexed when I reinstall? I don't see a keyway in any of the photos on the posts which I am used to. lockmedic
The pulley and crank are keyed. . just a standard woodruff key. Not that it matters, Subarus are internally balanced so you could hypothetically put it on in any clock position and it would be fine. The key is just there to keep the crank pulley and timing belt pulley from spinning on the crank nose. You'll see it when you get it apart. KeithMock
Thanks. Wanted to see if anyone knew BEFORE I pulled it apart and got myself in deep water! Also, as long as I didn't need to time it, it could go on in any location.
lockmedic
Just to be perfectly clear, it'll only go on one way. . .it just doesn't have to. You'll see the key in the crank and the groove in the pulley once you get it off. Just eyeball it and rotate it back and forth a little bit as you slide the pulley back on the crank and you'll feel it engage.
KeithMock
I have done pulleys before with keys so, no problem. Thanks again.
