monkeyposeur
Looking good!!! That sucks about the heads getting stolen. It took me quite a while to find a good set of wrx heads in good shape.
bcmaxx
thanks!, well it starts and runs! idles good, no engine lamp, tightened turbo coolant line i left loose. found out the sti invidia pipe exits quite a bit differently than the wrx downpipe. so I'm having some fun there.. it would be bolt up affair to the stainless exhaust kit otherwise
bcmaxx
she runs, no leaks.. i cant seem to figure out proper boost line routing for manual boost controller or what to hook the bov to.... so its running wastegate to inlet boost and sitting at 5psi, i unhooked the bov because it was dumping all the boost.. so some help here be awesome!! also at wot the af meter says lean. how do i troubleshoot this? check with fuel pressure meter first, see if its the pump not keeping up or the stock injectors? car RIPS , well compared to how it was. last i had a half tank of 87 i should have burned first before the swap, i tanked up with 94 and added a bottle of octane boost, am i okay? bcmaxx
I have an aem water meth kit to install. But where to put the nozzle?? I could possibly drill and tab the throttle body just before the throttle plate. Too close?? They say after the ic. But i have no room at all.... also was psi to have it turn on? 2-3? Im only running 6. Watsr injection to fight spark knock.
bcmaxx
meth nozzle mounted right to throttle body, works great! took out head gaskets last week, they were looking pretty rough, and replaced the drivers head ( couple cracks) . all back together, running awesome again! http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20141009_104117_zps0fe42786.jpg http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20141009_104106_zps4cae78ce.jpg http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20141009_105445_zps079dfd01.jpg http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20141012_124416_zpsfed5c405.jpg http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20141009_135452_zps164a1772.jpg
bcmaxx
Is there any reason I cannot run an ignition box on this car? two options: msd dis2, and the one that I really have my eye on is the hyfire 6 , with the optional map sensor adjustable boost timing. I call both their tech lines, and its as if I am speaking swahili to them. They say they are for older distributor cars, and never heard of some one rtrying to put one on a f/i car... I can get the hyfire 6 for 187$ plus tax overnight. what ye all say
USLiberty
No reason to run aftermarket ignition unless your running a lot more boost than you should be. I went with AeM dumb coilpacks only because I have aftermarket ecu that was frying the stockers

USLiberty
The biggest deal is machining the block to relocate the thrust bearing.
bcmaxx
that was that pesky noise! http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20150624_213436_zpsq8ayfgxr.jpg http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20150624_213443_zpsoel2hz23.jpg
bcmaxx
looking for some input: got my motor completely torn down, all 4 rod bearings were toast, one a little more. what I believe the cause was: On used shortblock assembly install, the bov hose had become jammed in the throttle @ wot. initial startup was bouncing off the rev limiter until I could shut it off. so I'm thinking dry bearings were damaged. started out a little knocky like piston slap, just on startup, and continually got worse until it was apparent when flaringing the throttle. silent at idle when warm, and silent under load. any other potential causes? swapped an sti oil pump at shortblock install. I will be replacing it with a new one again. mains looked perfect, which leads me to believe it was not an oil delivery problem. or it could have been the old oil pump on the used engine prior to me getting it, I hate mysteries ..... http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20150625_212456_zpsefqzufsw.jpg http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20150625_212446_zpsxt8ylpxx.jpg http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20150625_212439_zpsddjsjvd6.jpg
bcmaxx
well like the first project, this one is moving forward like molassess in january. I seem to have to many life commitments to tinker haha. And to top it off my motorcycle was stolen in broad daylight in front of my shop, when i went to get a coffee... I recovered it myself engine is done and ready to drop in, in the process of swapping the transmission, old one is out, new one almost ready to go in, swapping in new swaybars, lower control arms, all new lat links and bushings, rear diff (4.44) . big job for a driveway and jackstands. http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20150711_234526_zpsssyv1rvk.jpg http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20150708_220449_zpsmsc0tswc.jpg http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20150709_213229_zpszoutpc5n.jpg http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee110/bcmaxx/20150709_213159_zpspvjdpgnv.jpg

I will never tackle a job like this without a backup daily driver!! been almost 2 months!!
bcmaxx
back to the drawing board... will not prime, and mechanical interference, ( not timing) just ordered a brandnew new ej20 for now, I can no longer afford the downtime. I cannot even begin to imagine what is wrong. so i'll pull it , split the block at a later date...

Silinc3r
Seeing this makes me miss my 91. Looks like your having fun and learning, that's what I loved more than anything about the car. Fallen4Futral
Just bought a 93 Wagon for $450! let me tell you it was a steal! It was an abondoned vehicle. last oil change was in 2011 and 1000 miles ago! all I did was change the fuel pump and fuel filter and it fired right up. Since i was changing the fuel pump i went a head and put a 300 LPH in there. I have the N/A 2.2. I am planing on doing the same thing you did! Just a couple questions so that I am clear on what to buy. For exhaust I am thinking of buying the turbo back off a 02 WRX. TDo4 and then downpipe and back. is this what you did and did you have exhaust mounting issues? did the hanger match up? I've heard that the 06 intercooler is the thing to use cause it will fit easily due to it being skinnier and longer. An dhow much trouble did you have getting the intake all set up? I've read about people using 90 degree elbows and such but it didnt look like you used that.
bcmaxx
hi! good score! that whole exhaust setup can be made to work yes, it will require some cutting and welding, move a hanger or 2. 06 intercooler is an ideal fit in there yes!. i made the 02wrx work, but it was tight.. My intake is custom, all made from bits and pices found through vibrant. I use 2 silicone 90's ill try and get a pic. be sure to get a wideband at the very least, and some way of adding fuel. and keep boost well under 10psi, unless you are taking some measures to prevent pre igntion! ill post a couple pics of the intake setup. Fallen4Futral
Awesome! Once I have the turbo in and its running good and I'm ready to get more power out of it, what do you recommend for engine management? I just know that N/A Subaru's are pretty aggressively timed and I'll need to back that off quite a bit if I want to run more the 8 psi not to mention fuel mapping. But with the OBD 1 I'm not sure what my options are.
bcmaxx
I'm currently only running an aem water injection setup and j&s knock safeguard to pull timing under boost. There really isn't a piggyback that will pull timing. Msd had a few older setups that would do it. But they have long since been discontinued
Fallen4Futral
So I'm looking into that safeguard and looks like an awesome set up. reading on the website they make it sound like it does all the work and you don't have to do much adjustments. Did you buy there universal model? they have the vampire and interceptor as well (Which wouldn't work for our old set ups). Did you just get the whole $595 package? Doesn't seem to difficult to wire in what was your experience with that? Do you think that if I was to just use 91 pump gas I could use a RRFPR and that would take care of the fuel delivery side? I have some 550cc injectors that I could put on. Cause with the timing being retarded and the fuel being delivered I should be able to get to the point where the only thing holding me back is the capabilities of the motor. I just want to run a safe 12-14 Psi. Anything else I'm missing?
