Who here let's their turbo "cool"?

Recommended Posts

I don't think Rob-2 wants to play with me anymore.

Warmup for a minute or two, low load (less than 3000rpm) until water temp is in center section (just above line). Then you're ok.

Cooldown. If you got your turbo smoking hot (burnt oil coming out of the hood), then a cool down is good. The rest of the time take it easy on the last few minutes to your house, let it idle while you get ready to get out of the car. if you idle too long the engine temp starts to go up, and you get a negative effect.

In autox, you flog your car, shut it off and coast back to the line, imediately open the hood and hose down the radiator. Rinse & repeat. Car is fine from that, so you're daily hooning attempts aren't going to have much impact.

Where do you find a hose at an autox event?

Do you actually do the things you recommend or are you making most of this stuff up?

Done years of autox and people who worry about temps do laps in a quiet area of the parking space. This is standard practice for track days as well. In all my years I've never seen the crap you've suggested. It's over the top nearly all the time - so no I don't bite often anymore.

I'd still like to hear from some of the 100k+ on the original turbo crowd though.

158k original turbo. Wife drives the car but has no care in the world if engine is warm or cold just gets in and goes. Never lets it idle down.

4kOCI whatever dino oil garage sticks in.

I always warm up or at least never go into boost until the temp gauge is up to normal operating temp. Never heard of the cool down, I will now let idle for 10-15 sec why not sounds good to me.

On cold days (0-32 degrees), I always used to let my car idle for a while at startup. I asked my mechanic (Subaru specialist) and he said that was unnecessary. Instead, just run gently for the first mile or so.

Not too easy to do when you live on a hill and the turbo runs for 20-30 seconds just prior to pulling in the garage.

I would still only be worried if your running wide open that entire hill. The. I will say you have some serious balls for charging at your garage that fast!

With the exception of various forms of racing I don't see why this is a question. You could drive like a bat out of hell but any civilized person will at least respect the fact they have to park somewhere and won't be flying into that parking lot at 476 mph. That last bit will be more than enough.

In had a remote starter in my wrx, and would let it warm nicely. I didn't do it for the car, I did it because I'm a pussy. I'm excited for having a garage this winter.

Otherwise, Get in start the car first. Then buckle up, pick your tunes, put the phone on the charger, and go. People stress too much. Modern technology has made cars more durable. Just don't start the car and instantly do a drag launch out of the parking lot unless its a Walmart.
