Spikes Spider

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever used these on their Subaru? I know we have all wheel drive, and I'm getting a better all season tire put on (Bridgestone Turanza LS-H), but I still want to be sure I'll have all the grip I need in the deep snow and ice when I go to the mountains. And getting snow tires isn't an option, because I live in So Cal and will only be going to the snow 5-10 times/year. The Spikes Spider seem insanely easy to put on and take off (much unlike cable chains). How have all your Subies done in the snow in the past? Do you need winter tires or chains (w/ all season tires) usually in the white stuff? Thanks in advance for your replies.

You won't need it. Here's a few examples of what my old WRX did on a regular basis: That car went through snow that was deeper than the front bumper with no complaints. I have a lot of land to clear snow from- shoulda put a plow on it....

These pics make me think of the typical Nasioc OT Reply: OhN0eS!!111!!!!! What's gonna happen when you get Sn0w in Ur InterCo0llAr!!!!!! Great pics...my WRX wagon (on the trading block for the 05 GTW) has never seen the snow, but I had visions or Rally grandeur in my 86 GL Hatch....I would donut and spin and hammer corners in 4wd in the snow of PA all winter long. good times, good times... And in response to Austin 3:16's question above, if you need to put spikes on your Subie, you probably should not be there at all...a Subie, on regular tires, will get your through 2 feet of snow with no problem, as long as you drive with some restraint. What you do have to worry about is everyone else sliding into you, rather than you getting stuck. OR, you can do what the WRX above is doing as well...doesn't really get you anywhere, but the pucker-factor makes it a whole boatload of fun. Man, I miss snow sometimes. GeoB

That snow was deeper than it looked. It was actually close to the bottom of the headlights. I saw the lot was open and nobody had been there doing donuts. So I had to go break that cherry! Scary part was I'd had the car in snowstorms and such and had no problems. But this was really deep snow in a big parking lot and I knew that if I got stuck I'd feel like an ass. So I hit the snow at about 30 and proceeded to do donuts. Then I said to myself "Hmm, I wonder if I launch this thing into a patch of fresh snow and stop if I'll be able to get going again". Sure enough, I was going through the snow like it was nothing. Oh, and this was all on the stock RE92's. I'm sure if I had Blizzak's for it the traction would have been even better.

i went through a winter on the re92's and they didn't cut it in wet snow. to get home i have to make a sharp right hand turn while going uphill and the tires wouldn't hold me on the road. dedicated snows for me.

You just have to be careful with the RE92's. Like any other tire (or car for that matter), don't drive beyond its' limits and you'll be fine. That being said, dedicated snows would be much better than the RE92's.
