  1. I don't think you will harm anything at all replacing the fluid. Just don't put in the 3.6 or 3.7 quarts the manual calls for, you'll overfill it like max said. Put in a little over 3 quarts, and check the level on the dipstick. The dipstick is directly over the passenger side cv axle with the yellow handle. I like red line 75w-90ns for the best/smoothest shifting, even in cold weather.

    Ok great thanks!

  2. You can change the MT fluid at any time.

I have heard and have destroy an auto transmission shortly after an oil change on an 80's GM car. I think those issue are more prevalent with older transmissions. I changed my Outback 4EAT transmission fluid three times at 115k miles and I didn't have any issues .

So change if the fluid won’t cause damage even though the fluid has 150k on it ?

  3. I just bought a 2008 Subaru Legacy 2.5i in great shape with 153k on it and the timing belt, water pump and head gaskets were replaced at 116k but the guy did not have any record of the manual trans fluid ever being changed this might be a dumb question but this is my first manual car and I know that in a automatic if you don’t know if the fluid has been changed you should leave it alone but is it the same case for a manual trans ? Should I change the fluid or leave it alone?

  5. I sometimes take my mom's AT car out for a spin when I visit her or she visits me, and her car does the same thing when parked on an incline (which is how she's always parked). On her acura it is a really, really disturbing sound which makes me cringe so hard. I've found if I engage the parking brake before shifting into park, that fixes it. I guess it's the sound of the parking pawl which locks the transmission disengaging

Edit: so I guess I'm asking, does yours do it all the time? or only on an incline? I know it's not a ford, but same concept, and this guy has really good videos.

It does on a incline only but doesn’t need to be a very big incline it also does it on very small incline

  6. Honestly after 11 years and 240k, nothing in those videos sounds too abnormal to me. I hear a little stumble or something when the engine is cold, but it's not something I'd worry about if there are no codes and the car drives fine. I think if anything our cars tend to run a little rich. Could try cleaning the maf sensor, I can't remember if you've done plugs yet, could check spark plug wire resistance, coil pack resistance.

Yeah I’ve done plugs when I first got it but never did or checked the wires I’ll check those soon

  7. Should try to upload video or audio when you have time

That is with it running for about 5 minutes

And this is with it cold like 12+ hours sitting

And also I’ve noticed it kinda running like crap when it first starts cold you can hear it in the first video it sounds likes it’s running really lean, bad fpr? Bad fuel pump?

  8. Park to reverse would likely be the most pronounced clunk between gear shifts, same with park to drive. If you get a lot of shudder at idle then that is also another symptom.

The pitch stop mount is essentially an engine mount. It looks like a dog bone and it links up between the top of your transmission and the back of the engine. When the bushings in it wear out, you get a bit of that clunking effect. I can’t find anything that definitely says that your 2008 NA Legacy has a pitch stop mount, but it would often be replaced with your engine mounts. It’s towards the middle of your engine bay back towards the firewall.

Has the transmission fluid been changed recently? Diff fluids? Those should be done whenever you buy a used car.

I did change the transmission fluid about 10k ago but I haven’t done the diff fluid yet should I do it soon?

I do remember seeing that I haven’t checked the bushings on it though I’ll check that today!

  10. Could be a carrier bearing going bad too. Get under the car, about 18" behind the transmission there will be a bearing bolted to the chassis. grab the shafts on either side of the bearing and check for movement. I little is ok but if its easy to move around, that is most likely the issue.

Most any auto parts store will have a replacement propeller shaft as its called by Subaru.

When mine was going bad, i could feel a vibration when I put my right elbow on the center consul when driving at highway speeds.

    Ok great I’ll check that!

  11. Are your engine and transmission mounts original? Original pitch stop (if the non turbos have those)?

I don’t know if they are original but I would assume so. I bought the car with 175k or so and I haven’t done them as long as I’ve had it. Would a bad mount only clunk going from park to reverse? Wouldn’t it clunk going into other gears as well if it was a bad mount? What is a pitch stop? (lol I’m a noob)

  12. I have a 2009 Subaru Legacy non turbo and when I am in park and shift into reverse I here this clunk sort of noise and I only hear it when the car is cold. It happens only once even if I shift from park to reverse then back to park and then back to reverse it won’t clunck. And I only hear the noise when going from park to reverse I don’t hear it any other time. Car has 207k any help is appreciated!

  13. Don’t know if this is the place for this if not please take it down but I need some help. I have a 2009 legacy and I am adding black leather to it and the passenger seat I got is powered but the original seats are not. I looked up and people said there should be the harness for the power seat under the carpet but I don’t see it. Am I just not looking good enough? Should I run power from the battery? If so what is the best and safest way to do so?

  14. I don't know what the tick sounds like, but our engines are very noisy, I'm thinking it's normal.

It sounds crazy, probably since I don't fully understand how fuel injectors work, but I hear they click/clack like crazy on our cars.

Another possibility is piston slap, the piston slapping around in the cylinder until the engine warms up a bit. Sounds like it might be dangerous or bad, but from what I've read, it's actually no big deal..

So it sounds like it's probably a little bit of piston slap since it's temperature dependent.

It's also strange, but normal that the rpm's drop once you tap the throttle after starting the car. I'll often tap my throttle in the morning to quiet my car down, so that I don't wake the neighbors.

It’s more of a tick and sounds fine when warm and if I put into drive when cold it goes away

  15. When I cold start my Subaru Legacy 2.5 cold it sounds like the manifold is ticking like it has a leak or the bolts are snapped or something. It has done this since I bought and and the previous owner cut out the flex pipes and welded in straight pipes could this be the issue? It will continue to tick until it warms up then the tick goes away. But the weird thing is that if I tap the gas and rev up to like 3k or so and then the rpms fall and the tick goes away but it starts cold at like 2k but once I tap the gas the rpms go down to like 1k and the tick goes away any help!

  16. After reading the service manual, it sounds like that's normal. So basically the car downshifts when you tap the throttle? The car thinks you want to quickly accelerate, so it downshifts to give you better acceleration. Then the car realizes hey, the throttle was only tapped, we can go back into a normal gear and drive like we normally would.

When in sport mode, the car is probably already in a lower, more acceleration ready gear, so it doesn't have to downshift like in normal mode.

I don't know, those are my thoughts at least.

Ok that makes sense thanks so much

  17. I am having an issue with my 2009 Legacy without the turbo. It has 206k on it and runs great and tranny shifts very well. The issue I am having is that whenever I’m driving and any speed or gear and I like “tap” the throttle the whole car will start to slow down and the RPMs will go way up into the 4K range and the car will downshift a gear and then after 2-3 seconds the car will upshift again and the RPMs will go back to normal and everything is fine but the weird thing if I put the car into Sport mode and “tap” the throttle like before everything is fine I don’t know what it could be any help, is appreciated!
