  1. Our Legacy was recently involved in a minor fender bender. Insurance estimated $1,800 to repair the right rear corner plus supplemental cost to fix the disabled BSW/RCTA. Body shops around warned of a long wait due to backlog on parts availability so I settled for a mobile body shop who did a decent job and got it all done in one day on our driveway. Next, I brought the car to my regular Subaru dealer to address the disabled BSW/RCTA. Ended up authorizing a $150 diagnostic charge and $350 to replace the housing for the sensor. The Service Advisor came back later to report that the sensor module was acting up and would cost an additional $823 to replace. Frustrated, I declined further service and thought perhaps of getting a second opinion, Abouts two weeks ago, I picked up 4 50-lb bags of play sand and loaded them in the trunk. Left the bags in the car for almost half a day until I got home. The next time I drove the car, the dashboard light warning that the BSW/RTCA is disabled disappeared and it started giving the usual warning alerts of any incoming vehicles when backing up. Probably too early to say but a little procastination did pay. Maybe all that weight from the sandbags corrected the problem?
  2. Suffered my 4th cracked windshield 3 days ago. At wits' end, what to do next. A Law360 reports a California woman filed a lawsuit in June 2017 alleging Subaru knew as early as 2014 that Outback and Legacy windshields were designed and/or manufactured with a defect and the company knew this in 2014. A California Judge agreed that Subaru knew of the defects and that plaintiffs will receive compensation. Any truth to this?
  3. SOA reimbursed first windshield replacement and insurance covered second and third including recalibration. Just got our new insurance bill. Premium went up by almost 20%. Still that's not as bad as my wife getting jumpy everytime she hears that familiar sound of something hitting her car however faint. Takes away some of the driving enjoyment from an otherwise best driving car in its class with safety features once reserved only to much higher-priced cars. Always good to hear other owners have not had the unfortunate experience. Gives hope the last will be it.
  4. Another cracked windshield last night - third time. Safelite says they can also recalibrate the Eyesight. Anyone used them to this?
  5. Safelite replaced my cracked windshield yesterday, the second in less than two years. This time I went with an OE. As he gingerly unloaded the glass, the installer pointed out how thin the glass was and mentioned this is the tenth he's done for the day, mostly Subarus!
  6. After replacing a cracked windshield more than year ago, I again noticed a 6-inch crack on the lower right side of the windshield the other day. My insurance carrier is picking up the cost to replace it without a deductible but I am urged to bring the Legacy for the eyesight to be recalibrated after they install the new one tomorrow. Will Subaru similarly perform the service at no cost as they did the first time?
  7. After two dealers and the installer said I don't need to have the eyesight recalibrated after replacing the cracked winshield, SoA now tells them they need to have the eyesight recalibrated. That is stepping up. When they have finally approved a reimbursement, I would agree that would be called stepping up too, but ony then.
  8. Received email below from SoA an hour ago: Good Morning BJ, I have received the information from you in regards to the inspection of your windshield. I understand that the retailer advised that it is not covered under any type of warranty and your vehicle does not pertain to the tsb. If you would be kind enough to get an estimate for the replacement of the windshield I will review for a possible one-time goodwill assistance. You can submit the estimate by attaching to this email.[end] No doubt this is appreciated but it would be equally nice to know what they are doing about the apparent problem and share whatever findings they might have. Is it the glass, glue, design or something else that is the cause? Since replacement are done mostly by third-party service providers, it would be helpful if SoA steps up and give owners some advice or tips to ensure proper replacement and assurances that those with eyesight don't need calibration. In my case, it was difficult to choose an aftermarket (Pilkington) over OEM (Carlex) but without any hard facts I didn't have much to rely on except my own experience and confidence level with the OEM.
  9. Did call SoA twice, thrice including the one time when I had to hang up after more than 15 mins on the queue. Last time I spoke to them, they promised to call me back but they seem to be taking a long time to decide which is why I went ahead with the replacement. Did show the TSB to the second dealer I saw but he read it differently. Will continue to pursue. Thanks for the heads up!
  10. Went to another dealer today and the service manager there also is convinced the crack was caused by a chip. It gets worse (longer) especially when I leave the car out in AZ's blistering sun. Found someone who can replace it this afternoon. Had to decide whether to go with OEM for $700 or an aftermarket at $387. Went with the aftermarket and at the same time replaced my insurance with a carrier with free glass coverage and for less money to boot.
  11. Glad to join the discussion. Bought mine more than four months ago and have a little more than 3K miles. Late morning yesterday while travelling less than 30 mph, I heard a faint strange pop and it wasn't until a few minutes later that I noticed an r-shaped crack in the bottom middle section of the windshield. I took it to the neareast Subaru dealer and the service lady who looked at it said it was caused by a chip which I highly doubt. On second thought, the noise I heard earlier sounded more like glass crackling . First time this ever happened to me in my almost fifty years of driving. One thing I"m certain at the time it happened was that there were no immediate vehicles near or in front of me. The service lady gave me the business card of a third-party provider they use to replace windshieds. When I called, the owner said he'll call me back on Monday to let me know if it's in stock and will give me a more firm quote from his estimate of $540. Does it even make sense to call SOA?
