No trolling over here. Im 30 and have two engineering degrees, one being automotive engineering, main study Mechanical Engineering...
The speed limit is 30, they were traveling so fast that the front of the forester clipped and bounced my 26,000 lb dump truck across the yard.

NOW!!! Lastnight a drunk driver veered off of the road into my driveway and smashed my 04 FXT in half!
-
The guy kept driving and I didnt get a tag, It happened so fast I couldnt even tell what kind of truck it was. No body damage. Just the wheels and struts. Even the $1000 tires are still ok! I swapped to some steelies from a first gen forester and swapped back to the OEM struts. Then I had it inspected by a dealership in Columbus,Ga. They said nothing is bent or broken. Going to pick it up Tomorrow. Plan on rebuilding the coilovers again and buying some used wheels then putting my tires back on. Gotta get it back right because it was riding so nicely.

Welp a drunk driver ran me off the road Saturday night.
Curb cracked two of my wheels in half, and dented the other two.
Also the front passenger coliover complete snapped in half.

I have a 95 JDM BG5 GT wagon and would like to swap out my suspension. It currently has HSD coilovers, but even on the softest setting, they are way to hard for my liking. ABS goes off over the slightest bump while braking and it just feels like I'm bouncing down the road, even on my soft winter tires (I'm in Canada). Being in Canada, the roads aren't great, with many frost heaves and potholes. I was thinking I'd try out either a stock WRX or STi setup. Can anyone comment on the relative difference in ride quality between them? Any particular brands they'd recommend? Where to purchase? I want a sporty ride with good handling, but I don't want to get beat up all the time. It isn't my daily driver, and I'll only be driving it for fun, but not likely ever on a track. The car has Whiteline swaybars and links front and back. I'm pretty sure 22m rear and 20mm front. Any information/comments of WRX vs STi would be greatly appreciated.
04 STI Springs on KYB Excel-G Struts for a WRX wiould be much softer and have great ride quality.

yeah from what i read it said you can use pretty much any 02-07 wrx struts, but i was reading more and someone mentioned you are supposed to use wagon with wagon and sedan with sedan, i just dont want to haul the wrong parts home
You can use sedan parts on a wagon, but may need subtle saggy butt spacers
-
I will be modifying my spare tire well this weekend also to fit a 25mm adjustable Cobb rear sway bar (designed for an 04-08 Forester) as well.
-
With the damper set the way you have it, is the ride quality pretty harsh compared to stock?
No its not harsh at all.
I prefer it very much so over the stock suspension.
-
How are these working out and how do you have it set up (ride height/damper settings)?
Im running 245/40R18 with no wheel spacers without any scrub. Camber is moderate but definitely not "stanced". Running Triple C Camber bolts in the rears. Front camber plates are set at Zero. Fender is about 3/4 from outer diameter of tire all the way around. OEM sway bars for the moment. But the ride quality is excellent. The dampers' setting are currently set right in the middle between stiff and soft.
Will get a pic sometime today.

i just took a small hacksaw to the bracket and notched it out.
I thought about it but Its so easy to bleed the brakes.
Maybe even easier than a hacksaw.

Havent driven it yet. I guessed at a preliminary coilover length based on the OEM struts minus 2.5" all the way around as a baseline.
Then Installed them and the wheels and put it on the ground.
Next I measured from top of tire to fender on front and back
to see how much lower I wanted it.
Took the wheels back off and adjusted height of coilover again.
Should be good to go now, but I have to bleed the brakes first.
Because in order to remove the OEM struts all brake lines had to be disconnected and routed through a hole in hte backet on the strut.
Should be back rolling tonight hopefully.

Just installed a set of Megan Racing "Street" coilovers designed for 03-08 Foresters
onto my 97 Legacy Outback Limited. Everything fits right up.
(except brake line mounting which was already known, but zipties will fix that).
The only downside is that the front camber plates do not align horizontally.
I tried rotating it in the three different position and just used the closest one to horizontal.

Looks like you have a Legacy Wagon and mine is an outback.
I should see a noticeable drop and stiffness especially with the STI springs.
Still insearch of tophats 02-07 WRX, Forester, Legacy.
-
'98Wagon,
Are you saying that I can use my stock 97 Legact Outback tophats with
the 02-07 WRX Struts and 04 STI springs?
If so that would be awesome.
OR are you saying that I have to use 02-07 tophats and they will interchange/fit on the 97 body?
-
02-07 tophats interchange with legacy tophats..btdt
I was informed at some point in time that the diameter of the springs were different and/or the very end of the spring on the topside was located at a different orientation along the circumference.
Thanks for you input, I will try to measure and compare everything today for peace of mind since Im putting the car on jackstands today to install short shifter, bushings and TiC Linkage update, as well as new tranny mount and cross member bushings.

I have KYB GR2/Excel-g for a WRX and 04 STI springs.
This setup was previously used on my 04 Forester XT with my stock XT tophats.
I converted my FXT back to stock which included using its tophats.
I would like to install these on my 97 Legacy Outback
But Im pretty sure the stock outback tophats will Not work? (Im pretty sure?)
So I am in search of any tophats that will work (WRX or Forester will both work I assume, or maybe even newer legacys?).
If anyone ready this has any for sale, please PM me

Wish there was more on lifting Subarus, I always lowered my subarus, I decided to go the opposite direction with my 96 L (Section on turing your L into outback ride height, still poking around threads.
Maybe some lift blocks from Subtle Solutions to start with.

I recently acquired a set of Megan Street Coilovers, that were for an 03-07 Forester. I know they will fit the knuckes, but will the tops of them work on the body? I am fairly sure that the front will, it is the rear that I question. It is just a large round plate with a small flat on one side. It also does not have the rubber boot at the very top (megan Street coilovers for WRX 02-07 do have the rubber boots at top for reference).
Again I am wanting to put (Megan Street coilovers for an 03-07 forester) onto a '97 Legacy Outback.

^Awesome thanks for sharing.
I am definitely wanting to do this now.
But that has no mention of a body spacer between strut and body as was asked previously.
Is that built onto the outback strut? Or is it just a taller strut without a spacer?
-
I have read that the 04 sti strut/spring combo should give about 1" of drop and the WRX strut/spring combo is about .5"....
Am I correct to assume that is not based on an Outback stock ride height?
That is true. WRX Strut/springs will lower much more than 1" on an outback
Also, if the body mount spacers you are referring to are the saggy butt spacers, you will need those in the rear to level it out. 3/8" should do it
-
Maybe since mine are WRX struts, they wont be too low for my liking.
I am putting 245 wide tires on so I may have to borrow a friends fender roller anyway.
On another forum someone pointed out to me that the 02-03 STI and 04-07 STI struts are different.I looked at some pics and the rear struts on the 04-07 have the mounting for the top of sthe spring offset from the center of the strut shaft. Will they both work on our cars? If they both fit, is one better than the other geometrically speakeing for our cars?
-
Looks like I am on the quest for 4 tophats then.
I know the second gen forester tophats work with the 04 STI springs.
So pretty much any tophats from impreza, legacy, forester, wrx, sti, baja
in the 02-07 year range will work with these springs and fit my 1997 Legacy Outback??
-
I have a 97 Legacy Outback.
Can I use the stock tophats with 02-07 WRX Struts and 04 STI springs?
From the first page"Any '02-07 WRX strut, spring and top-hat combo will work on our cars." But this does not say that the stock outback top hats will work.
