Yes, narrower is better. I understand that. What I don't understand is why you'd want a shorter tire. If you did the "narrower" tire conversion correctly, you should have gone with a 215/55R17. The 215/55R17 has both a narrower tread than the 215/50R17, and is slightly taller than the 225/50R17.
