  1. Still have a checklist of little fixes/tweaks for the car. Today i fixed a few of them.

The side marker lights where installed but not working yet. Today i finished the wiring for the lights. The markers are On with the lights and blink with the blinkers.

Next was the 'Outback' logo on the back was broken. it's was holding on kind of but the C was half broken. So i scraped the old one off and cleaned the area real well and epoxied the new one on:

The OEM power antenna had been replaced with an after market antenna. 'They,' never connected to the cars wiring so it was stuck in the up position. today i finished the wiring and now it works correctly on/up off/down with the stereo.

And i made a costume CB Mic mount:

  2. Still working on wiring and lighting. I installed new 4x20w LEDs connected to a toggle switch. The switch is a SPDT one side connects the LEDs to the high beams and the other side to ON with a center OFF. Still deciding weather or not to install the light bar to the roof rack.

    Low Beams with lower LEDs:

    High Beams with upper LEDs:

  3. Hi sondorsk, Thank you! The ride is amazing! the car drives more like a BMW then a Subaru, in my opinion. The car feels very proud, stout maybe. The cornering and traction are surprisingly good. (And i have tested it) Before moving the suspension from the '96, the car felt sloppy and kinda boaty. also the brakes sucked! The previous owner had bought a new car and stopped maintaining the Outback.

Alter moving the suspension, hubs, brakes, half shafts, lift blocks and wheels its a different car. I replaced the stock steel lower control arms with stronger solid aluminum control arms. And replaced the stock sway bar links Whiteline links. I love the way it drives on and off road. The steering is tight and responsive. No over or under steer. And the 2.5 DOHC moves the car really nicely. I'm pretty happy the results so far.

  4. Spent the morning in the snow wiring the winch and CB radio. I had pulled the wiring harness for the winch from the '96. Still a lot of work installing and testing.

Went out for a drive this afternoon. Lizard Head Pass - Highway 145:

  5. I love this f***ing car!

Spent the day at 2 shops working on the car. 1st the muffler shop getting a new exhaust system built. the car had 3 cats. I got rid of 2, left the front cat witch has the two o2 sensors. Left in the resonator and installed the Megaflow muffler from the '96. The car has a really nice rumble now it sounds great.

And the 2nd shop, the off-road guys. the '96 skid plate would not fit under the 2.5 DOHC engine so it had to be modified a little. Cut off the tow points on the front. And weld on brackets for the LED lights.

The car is running and driving amazing!

  6. Had to have my rear spoiler back. I pulled it off the '96 and just installed it on the '99

It came out perfect and looks great!

  7. I've painted the lower part of the car with black Herculiner bed liner. Nasty stuff! But it should protect the car and it looks pretty good. What do you think?

New Whiteline front sway bar links:

    Installed:

And new Whiteline steering rack bushings, yet to be installed.

  8. Hi All, finally getting the new car together. The 1999 Outback had a blown head gaskets and kept overheating. So, i needed to either rebuild an engine with 200,000+ miles or buy a replacement engine. I went with a JDM engine with 60,000 miles.

The new engine is in and running great. Also, the new engine got new head gaskets, timing belt kit and new water pump. And i've pulled all the suspension, brakes, wheel spacers, bumper and lots of other stuff from the 1996. lots more to do, but the car looks great and drives amazing. The extra power of the 2.5 DOHC perfect for that car. the 1996 with the 2.2 SOHC was a bit under powered.

    http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/SubaruM2.jpg

New JDM engine: 2.5l DOHC 90,521 km or 56,247 miles on it!

A work in progress: Finally getting warm enough to work outside here.

  9. You may have noticed we have a lot of snow up here in the mountains. The Telluride ski Area says we've received 95 inches so far this season. And hopefully lots more come. So i've started to swapping of parts: all the gauge cluster lights and today the snow tires. I'm working with a local shop to swap over all 4 strut towers and half shafts, and the front bumper within the next couple weeks.

  10. Hi all, been awhile. I just bought a 1999 Outback 30th Anniversary Limited Addition. 203,000 miles, overall in excellent condition for $2000.00. everything works, 2 sunroofs!!!! leather heated seats. I bought it from the original owner.

I'm going to move all the upgrades from my 1996 over to the 1999. Bit of a project:

  11. Back out in Paradox last weekend. It’s already winter in Telluride, so Paradox offers some welcome warmth and some very fun roads to explore. The Subaru is still running great and the having the Grabber AT2’s (tires) on this car is amazing.

Wray Mesa: Y1 Road witch connects to Wray Mesa Road through beautiful pine forest and great views.

  12. The new spherical bearings from Parrin showed up this afternoon. I was able to tap out the old bearings and tap in the new ones with a 17mm socket.

  13. ...much worse...meier motor sports. Thanks for the post.

Out at Swasey's Beach yesterday. About 330 miles round trip from Telluride, Co and the Subaru ran perfectly. That's the longest trip i've taken since drowning the car.

Swasey's Beach is a beautiful sandy beach, just north of the town of Green River, Ut and on the East bank of the Green River. The water temp was about 70F with a fast current.

    http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/SwaseysBeach.jpg

I've been hearing some noises at the rear of the car. I tracked it down to failing rear sway bar links. Some very expensive Perrin Performance links. I emailed Perrin about the problem and they are sending me brand new spherical bearings for the links. Thank you Perrin.

  14. Bummer zcrow, the header pipes completely change the power curve on that engine. Much smoother acceleration and as I’ve mentioned, faster shifting.

Another causality of the flooding: A few days ago I couldn’t get my car to start. I finally it started after hitting the started a couple of times with a hammer. I replaced it with one from ebay.com, it’s a remanufactured starter for $73.00 with free shipping. The installation it was a pain-in-the-a**. I couldn’t remove the lower nut on the starter without removing the bracket holding the automatic transmission dip-stick tube. I might pull apart the old one and see what’s failing. Most likely the water washed all the grease out of the starter and the bendix got stuck.

  15. Just got my car back....Ahhhhh that engine is so quite now, you can hear the sweet sound of the headers.

I'm surprised that the bearings (idlers) didn't disintegrate they were in such bad condition. The timing belt tensioner bearing sounded like it had rocks in it. The car has about 216,000 miles, the idlers and water pump you could tell were original. They had to be changed!

  16. That's interesting, wonder why Subaru used single port on some cars and dual port on others. My car is a '96 L Wagon 2.2L 16V (4EAT automatic transmission.)

My Subaru is at the local mechanic today. I'm having all the timing belt idlers, water-pump and thermostat changed and of course new anti-freeze. Since the flooding, the idler bearings have been getting louder and louder.

I asked the mechanic about the exhaust ports, if he know why some had single and some dual. And he didn't have an answer??? This shop works on a LOT of Subaru's. Every other car in Telluride I think is a Subaru. :)

  17. I could be wrong but, i believe that all the 16 valve 2.2L engines have dual exhaust. If anyone can verify this, please do. It's very easy to check. Look at the Y-pipe at the bottom of the engine you should be able to see the exhaust and the number of ports on each side.

    original downpipe from my car:

  18. Hi Soob4ME, Thanks for checking in. Don't think i'll install a receiver hitch, I'll loose too much clearance in the back. I have in the past, looked into it though. The new tail pipe is pretty bomber.

Love the new front skid-plate, i kept hitting the old one. It happened to be the lowest point at the front of the car. Also the new plate is twice as thick as the last one.
