  1. When I was working in Italy years ago, a buddy of mine had a rental Renault wagon with a really pronounced "hang." I always made fun of him for it, because the car made it sound like he had no idea how to drive a stick. Until one day when I drove his car, and I realized it was just the car.

My rental was a Peugot 206. What a blast that little thing was, for a teeny FWD.

  2. Excellent! Thank you!

Then I'll just get an aftermarket shifter and e-brake boot.

You can use an STi shifter or a Spec B shifter with the 6MT. They're interchangeable, as long as you get the correct boot. STi boot goes with STi shifter, Spec B boot goes with Spec B shifter. They only real difference is how the boot attaches to the shift lever itself. You can make it work either way (I did), but you'll make it easier on yourself if you get the right one.

  3. $600 scam right here. Insane price. You could get the same effect hooking up a hair dryer...

YOu can't do this either. I test first by connecting a hair drier with large electric inverter under the hood connect to the batter with large-gauge cables. This is the only way to power 1.8kW hair dryer for the intake. Results were not as good as I expect. I saw increase in boost but I think the hot air makes a problem for the intake. This is my stage3 but I will look at OP's solution instead.

  4. IIRC, the shift lever is only different because of the way the boot connects (part #19). They're mechanically interchangeable. I have an email from Cobb somewhere on that. I have a 2010 STI 6MT and a Cobb STS, but I kept my LGT surround & boot. I had to rig the boot connection to mate up with the shifter.
  5. Some good news from Russia for those, who want to get R180 on their B13 legacy but for some reason can't get Spec B axles.

We successfully installed R180 on 03' JDM legacy GT(B13 started from 2003 in japan), using pre-5*114 axles from 03' JDM GDB STI(30 splines on both ends of the inner shaft, AFAIK it's the same as US pre-5*114). We used outer CV joints from (you must get mentally ready) hyundai elantra. P/N MEYLE 37-14 498 0000. One car is running them with IHI VF42 for at least 50000 kms without faults, other just got them on.

    Splines count:

    LGT hub - 25

    STI inner shaft - 30.

Swap is a direct bolt-on, CV joints went in as if they were manufactured for that exact reason.

Don't know the situation with parts in US, but here it's almost impossible to get your hands on used spec B axles, and for new ones you have to wait a month and pay ~$1200.

STI axles are easy to find wherever you want, and usual price is $300 for pair. Meyle CV's are $100 for pair and can be found in any shop.

Good info... interesting choice for a first post. I'm running a WRX R160, with no immediate plans to swap out rear diffs, but this is a, ahem, unique option.

  6. The 5MT's are not weak. You can argue you this to death, but you're wrong.

There aren't the failures to back up this claim. Even if you tripled the count of damaged 5MT's, it's still a very low failure rate.

The 02-05 WRX's would fail in stock cars. Those were weak. There are HUNDREDS of reported cases of those failing.

The 06+ WRX shares the same transmission, and they aren't complaining about them being weak.

I'm trying to stop another internet farce before it becomes forum legend. They simply aren't as weak as you want them to be.

I think I've found the problem... it's simple reading comprehension... so, quick check: Try and find anywhere in my last few posts where I've said the 5MT is weak. The closest I came is to say it's more prone to failure than the 6MT.

I don't even want them to be weak, as you claim. I'm just asking for some evidence that the 5MT is as strong as the 6MT. And as much as I ask, I just keep getting anecdotes about 5MT failures. Hmm. Sensitivity may be playing a larger part of this than I'd imagined.

So I've got it. It's alright. I don't think I can learn anything else from this discussion. I'm good, thanks.
