It appears to be completely dependant on the situation, and it hasn't been consistent when dealing with two applications of the same components. Bottom line: don't buy it unless you you need it.

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but my install was successful and sounds great. iPod 3G 15GB sounds great, but make sure you take the line out from the dock connector (I used Belkin's power adapter with line out, ran the 1/8" aux-in wire to my center console). It it much louder (and distortion-free) than anything the headphone jack can put out.
