  1. I have a couple of questions: What other markets and Legacy/Outback model years use a navi HU like the one Cornelius has? Could we see pictures of the front and the label on the top?
  2. Some European and Australian Legacy/Liberty models have a different AVN HU (Audio/Video/Navigation) than USDM models. Visionhu posted this picture of the front of a EDM LHD HU and display in this thread: Cornelius posted in the huge 'OEM navi features hack' thread (which discusses the nav found in 2005-2009 USDM Legacies). Since this OEM nav HU is not the same, I thought it would be better to split that discussion off into a separate thread. With any luck, we'll work out the pin assignments for all of the various connectors. His Navi HU is very similar to the one used in 2008-2011 USDM Impreza and 2009-2011 USDM Forester. I've posted information about tbe USDM version (including pin-outs) in my 'Stock HU info' thread here (2nd half of post #11 in that thread). http://ae64.com/images-e41/Subaru_Kenwood_nav_rear-th.jpg The white 8-pin socket is for the rear view camera. A European variation of the Impreza/Forester Navi HU adds a socket for a Kenwood RDS-TMC Data Receiver (Radio Data System Traffic Message Channel) (see picture this thread on SubaruForester.org. Also see this thread). Cornelius' Navi has the RDS-TMC socket, plus two additional sockets. The green 6-pin socket looks like one on the 2010 USDM Legacy/Outback nav HUs. In 2010 USDM Legacy/Outbacks, the rear of the Navi HU looks very similar. However, there are significant differences, so that should have its own thread.   3. I'm glad you got it working. PAC's instructions refer to the square, 8-pin harness "i85" that plugs into the OEM HU. On that harness, pins 3 and 7 are for the SWCs. You've connected to the rectangular 8-pin harness B68 on the steering column. So of course the pin numbers were different than PAC's instructions. Did pins 6 and 7 on your car's B68 harness already have wires? If so, those likely connect all the way to i85 at your radio, and you could have made your connections there (via my i85 adapter). Didn't you receive my PM? Oh well.
  4. Yes. You'll need a 14-pin Subaru installation harness, similar to this: Those are available from any number of places. And you can use one of these to connect to your car's "i85" harness (which has the two SWC wires): [ADDED: That adapter (with PC board) is no longer available.   5. (answering some old questions...) As far as I know, all of the Subaru harman/kardon amps have that. I found this blurb on the cars101.com site (in the archive under 2009 Legacy): Yes. (I answered that in post #7)
  6. None of the HUs have a line-level sub out. The P-203UE was the only Legacy/Outback HU that had the 5th-channel speaker-level sub output. That's the same model that can play CDs with MP3 files (says "MP3/WMA" on the face). So yes, you'll have to send the main speaker outs to your sub/amp, unless you want to use utc_pyro's mod (see his thread: Modifying OEM head unit for un-eq’d line out). He may know of a place on the board to pick up pre-fader line outs. One downside of the IS335 kit for that location (on the fascia) is that you'll have to stow a coil of 6' of wire. And before you say "I can cut the cable shorter," the jack must be installed from the outside. So you can't solder the other end to anything larger than the mounting hole beforehand. That's why the body of the plug is so small.
  7. The biggest question is what kind of aux in jack do you want? Others have installed: A cable with a plain 3.5mm plug or jack poking out from somewhere (ash tray, center console bin, etc.) An aftermarket panel-mount 3.5mm jack (see this thread: looking for aux in cable) The 2008 Legacy/Outback OEM aux pod My i85 "breakout" adapter gives you a way to connect to the new HU's aux input while still connecting the other wires on the car's i85 harness to the HU. I'm looking at offering a less-expensive version (without the PC board). Some 2005-2006 models only have one wire (pin #8) that needs to be connected between the car's i85 plug and the newer radio's socket. Installing an aftermarket sub is a separate issue -- you'd face the same decisions even if you were keeping your factory radio. You might want my 14-pin combined forward/reverse harness to make that job much easier...

Even with gregnauman's mod (using a 2008+ Legacy/Outback OEM aux pod and console pocket "bin", plus a 2008+ Impreza aux harness), you'll want my i85 adapter -- the Impreza harness has a completely different connector intended to fit Impreza and Forester radios. Its pins are not compatible with Legacy/Outback's i85 harness. If you really wanted to go overboard with "plug and play" I could add an Impreza-style socket to my adapter board. So you'd plug the Legacy/Outback car's i85 harness into one end, the Impreza aux harness' plug into the other end, and have an i85 plug coming out the middle to plug into the OEM radio. But I can't think of any significant advantage to being able to disconnect the Impreza harness from my adapter board. Better to simply cut off the Impreza radio-side plug and solder the wires directly to my board.
  9. That model should work with SWCs (if connected properly). You asked for a clean wiring diagram. Look for 2007 vacation pix (perhaps search in thread titles only). Check your wiring -- unplug the 8-pin i85 plug from your HU and use an ohm meter to measure across the two SWC pins there. You should see the various resistor values when you push the SWC buttons. No power required (ignition key can be completely off).

  12. I haven't in a long time. Anything you've seen recently isn't mine, because... Hey integroid! I'm doing good, but my SVX isn't -- an idiot ran a red light and totaled mine. Fortunately, I wasn't injured (Subaru put a lot of metal in SVXs). But now I need another car. I'd like to find a 3.0, but they seem pretty rare.
  13. Howdy! I'm between Marietta and Sandy Springs. I'm looking for a newer car, and am leaning towards a 2006-ish Legacy. In the mean time, anyone nearby who's thinking of installing a new stereo (especially in a 2007 or later Subaru) I'd be happy to lend a hand (and a soldering iron).

  15. That's because you're looking at a different connector! The 5-pin green plug connects on the steering wheel side of the clockspring. Just plug it in and ignore the colors on that side (those colors aren't shown on the wiring diagram). You want to look at the wires on 8-pin harness B68 -- on the car side of the clock spring.
  16. The OEM SWC pods already have a resistor network. The schematic looks similar to this (from the 2005 Legacy wiring diagrams). You won't need to add any resistors yourself. You'll want to connect the SWI's White wire to one of the two SWC wires, and connect the other SWC wire to ground. The shift buttons simply connect the 'up' and 'down' input wires to ground. With the shift pods removed, it will be exactly the same as when you're not pushing either button. According to trabbic's thread, you should be able to plug in the green plug from the new audio pods inside the wheel in place of the one from the shift pods that you remove. You'll then need to modify some of the pins/wires on the 8-pin B68 harness (outside the wheel). You'll be re-assigning some of the pins to work with the SWCs and illumination instead of shift up/down. See my pin-out post here. Specifically, you need to cut or de-pin pins 2 and 7 (leave pin 8 tied to ground), and then connect pins 2, 6, and 7 to the signals needed for the SWCs. You definitely need to insulate the old pins or wires -- otherwise if they bump into each other or ground, you really could find your car trying to shift by itself. As I mentioned a few posts back, I have some pins/wires that I'm pretty sure will snap into the B68 connector. Send me an e-mail for details. Once you start opening up your steering wheel, take lots of pictures. Some of trabbic's pictures aren't very clear, so I'm sure others would appreciate seeing additional pics that are close-up and in focus.
  17. I've looked over the 2005 wiring diagrams, and figured out a few things. First, the pins used on the "B68" harness: [Added:] I've attached a PDF with pages showing connections to the various controls in the steering wheel (pages taken from the 2005 Legacy wiring diagrams). Errors/omissions/notes: On the page with the audio SWCs, the diagram omits the STx connectors (ST1 and ST2 or ST4). I included the page after that, which shows a drawing of the 5-pin connector inside the wheel. The "Satellite Switch" drawing erroneously labels the first button "POWER" instead of "MUTE," and is missing one more resistor from the ladder (pressing MUTE results in 22 ohms, not 0 ohms). The Audio System diagram shows only 2 of the 28 wires on bulkhead harness i1/B36. The page with the AT shift up/down buttons omits the label ST1 (B68 plugs into ST1). On cars that have the audio SWC wires in the "i85" harness (8-pin, at the radio): The SWC wires go from i85 to harness "i1" (pins 5 and 6). Bulkhead harness "B36" connects to "i1". B36 pins 5 (SWC+) and 6 (SWC–) go to harness B68 at the steering column. B68 plugs into ST1 (which connects to the stationary side of the roll connector). It's that second leg, from B36 to B68, which lacks the SWC wires on cars that have no audio buttons on the wheel. So if your i85 harness has the SWC wires, another place to connect to them is the empty pin locations on B36. If someone can post some good close-up pictures of i1 and B36, I may be able to find the correct pins to snap into B36. That would allow you to connect to the HU's SWC input by running new wires from B68 (at the steering column) to B36, instead of running all the way to the HU (and then having to tap into the SWC wires there). You would still need to find the two illumination/dimmer wires, but there should be many of those right behind the dash (since they're used by every control that has a backlight). 2005 Legacy B68 clockspring SWCs.pdf
  18. Check the JDM HVAC thread. Lots of people are pulling out their OEM radios, including 2007s and 2008s (both of which will work for you). If you were to decide that you did want the Aux-in jack, I have an adapter that would give you a way to wire that in. See this post (the 3rd item in the "i85 harness" section is the one you'd be interested in).
  19. I've just spent some time reading through all of trabbic's steering wheel transplant thread, as well as looking over the 2005 wiring diagrams. I'm pretty sure I have pins/wires that will snap into the "B68" harness plug (behind the steering column). So you won't have to 'shove wires in and hope they stay connected.' In theory I could make a forward/reverse adapter harness so you won't need to cut any factory wires. Don't know if it would be worth the effort/cost. I think I also see a way to connect half of the audio controls (without illumination) along with one of the shift pods. More later...
  20. That part shows up on both 1stSubaruParts.com and SubaruGenuineParts.com (probably others). But from this drawing on opposedforces.com it looks like that P/N is the shift up/down buttons (2 on each side), not the audio buttons (3 on each side). Could it be that easy to swap in the audio buttons on your wheel? I know that mod is possible on more recent years. You should double-check the P/N for the audio buttons, and whether that part will fit your wheel. Since you have an Outback, it's a bit more likely that the SWC wires go all the way through the clockspring connector (all of the 2005 Outback 3.0R models had the audio SWCs). It really could be a plug-and-play mod on your car. But you should do a little more checking to be sure.
  21. That pin is the VSS (vehicle speed signal) input into the h/k amp. Disconnecting that harness from the amp won't cause any problem (as long as you don't let anything touch the contact pins).
  22. Here are the pin-outs for the three harnesses on the 2009 and 2010 harman/kardon amplifier. Each of these pin orientations is viewing the pins side of the car's harness (wires pointing away from you). For the socket on the amp, you'll need to mirror the numbers horizontally (e.g., 12, 11, 10, etc.). Looking at the rear of the amp, the connectors from left to right are: R315, R317 (blue), R316 UPDATED: Thank you, Rickycc, for verifying the speaker wire polarities. I've heard from one other person who verified the 4 door speakers. I'd still like to get confirmation from a second person on the tweeters and subwoofer. If anyone opens up their speakers, please let me know which wire colors go to +/–, so I can update the pin-out tables with the polarities. Speakers usually have "+" and "-" stamped into the insulator board that holds the metal terminals, or inked onto the metal frame. Also, in this post, "Christopher" said that in his 2011 Outback, the front and rear channel wires were "180 degrees out of phase from each other" (technically, that would really mean they're the opposite polarity), and he had to reverse one pair. [after re-reading his post, I think he was talking about the outputs from the h/k amp to the speakers, even though at one point he wrote "inputs"]. So I'd really like to hear from someone who can verify that (and say whether it is the front or rears that have the wrong polarity). You can check this by sending your test signal into the aux input and compare it to the polarity ("phase" [sic]) that you see on the HU's and amp's outputs. In that same thread, Christopher also posted internal pictures of the h/k amp. I've found matching harnesses for R316 (2009) / R386 (2010-up) (the 24-pin one). UPDATE: I've also found matching harnesses for the other two. 10-pin is half of the Metra 70-1761 (or equivalent) set for Toyotas. 12-pin is Metra 70-7992 (or equivalent) for Suzuki. Both of those shells are from the same family, and the pins can be easily extracted and transplanted.   23. I've recently studied the 2009 wiring diagrams more thoroughly, and also realized I didn't fully answer the OP's question... A 14-pin radio harness will let you install a new HU, but will send the HU's 4 speaker outputs to the H/K amp. To bypass the H/K amp, you will need 2 or 3 additional harnesses. After you unplug the three harnesses from the H/K amp, you can either A) Connect from the H/K amp's input harness (signals from the HU) directly to the two output harnesses (on to the speakers). Note that the H/K amp has 8 outputs (4 doors, 2 tweeters, and dual sub). Probably no HU can drive them all from just 4 outputs. B) Run new speaker output wires from the HU (skipping those wires on the 14-pin install harness) and connect those directly to the H/K amp's two output harnessesAlternatively, you can skip all of the H/K amp's harnesses and... C) Run new speaker output wires from the HU directly to the speakersOf course, you can also insert your own aftermarket amp anywhere in the above scenarios. The existing power connections for the H/K amp under the seat may be adequate for a not-too-large amp (the H/K amp is supposedly 440 W). See the next post for pin-outs of the three harnesses.
  24. That's great news, Greg. You will need to extract the pins from that new Impreza cable. Your car's i85 plug has the wire at pin 8 that you need to keep (for display dimming control). Plus I'm fairly sure the Impreza harness' shell is not compatible with the Legacy radio's "i85" socket. Reminder — the i85 plug is the one with the white plastic guard/lock in the rear. If your car has steering wheel controls (or at least, if the harness has the wires for them), then your i85 will also have wires at pins 3 and 7. And finally, if your car has (or was wired for) the factory subwoofer in the rear, your i85 will have pins 4 and 6. As blue dragon wrote, only pin 6 conflicts with the new radio's Aux wires, but you should go ahead and remove both pins 4 and 6 from your i85 plug, so you don't have extraneous wires plugging into the new radio. [i looked back and found your post where you say you have the under seat type of sub, so your i85 shouldn't have any wires at pins 4 and 6. But I'll leave these notes for anyone else who does this mod] Pin numbering (view looking at the rear of the car's i85 harness, with the wires pointing towards you): 4 3 2 1 8 7 6 5 (which is the same orientation looking at the pins on the radio's socket)

In those Impreza kit installation instructions, on the harness... http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/5180/2008imprezaarmrestauxin.th.jpg (click for larger image)...the upper connector does look very similar to the plug and socket (C8) in your picture. Instead of buying the entire Impreza kit (which will include the Aux pod that you won't need), see if if SOA will give you the part number for just this harness from that kit.
