Evil L Wagon

I got some tar on my seat. When I went to clean it I was using everything I could, nothing was working well. The next day the spot looks like I cleaned the color out of the seat! Just wondering if anyone had this happen or knows what I could use to cover it up. Someone told me to use shoe polish but I think it would be hard to get the color right.
