  1. Update!

There is new legislature in the works on this! SEMA has issued a link that allows you to send an email to support legislature to protect auto racing in the US. Here is more info. If anyone has a minute, just fill out the form and click send. It automatically selects your local rep and does all the work for you :)

Congress Introduces Bill to Ensure that Motor Vehicles May Be Modified Into Racecars

U.S. Reps. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Richard Hudson (R-NC), Bill Posey (R-FL) and Lee Zeldin (R-NY) have introduced the bipartisan “Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2016” (RPM Act), which makes clear that it has always been legal to modify a street vehicle into a racecar used exclusively at the track. The practice was unquestioned until last year when the EPA proposed a new regulation which would make this activity illegal. SEMA supports the RPM Act and urges you to do so as well.

Ask Your Local Member of Congress to Support the RPM Act

Click on the link below to write your local member of Congress asking for their support of the RPM Act!

  2. You got it. No more aftermarket mods.

So if you don't want to sell a part for race use, you go through the wonderful process of CARB approval. The CARB board would essentially control ALL what is released out there for cars (probably the entire point of this proposal by the EPA). Prices would go up as CARB approval costs $$$ and takes a lot of time.

In an effort to clean up the air for a tiny percentage of vehicles on the road, they would put an entire industry of aftermarket part manufacturers, installers, etc. out of business. Real economic stimulation here....

I try to avoid anything political on our facebook page, but this one was just too ridiculous :)

  3. Bumping...Everyone who has an interest in modifying cars should be signing this petition. This does NOT only apply to heavy duty trucks...

Every part you purchase without CARB compliance would essentially go away as these are designed for "offroad use only". This is the real purpose of this EPA proposal as it has been a loop hole they are trying to close for some time.

  4. When I was selling my other car a month ago, I started finding a bunch of manual wagons listed for sale which was a bit surprising. But here is what I found local to MA/CT/RI:

    http://southcoast.craigslist.org/cto/5418908531.html

Or, if you really want to take on a project:

    http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/pts/5402470839.html

I couldn't find a manual at the time so had to go this route. Looked for about 6 months. But it nice to have something different. Last thing anyone expects to be fast is a Subaru station wagon. Stock mufflers really throw people off, well at least until the external dump opens up :)

    Max Capacity, appreciate the reference.

  5. I am pretty sure you a not going to find any additional info on this one.

Cheapest option: find a manual wagon

Next least expensive option: Swap in to 6 MT or 5MT and loose cruise and get a CAN error on the odometer

Most expensive option: Buy the auto, find a wrecked manual wagon or complete part-out, and then you will have the additional parts you need to swap in the car to do it 100% correctly, including the ECU, cluster and immobilizer, ABS unit, BCM, factory harnesses and whatever other little differences you find when doing the swap.

Honestly, it seems like paying a little more and sourcing a MT wagon is WAY better of an option if you do not own the car as of yet :)

  6. Mike has done all of my personal Subaru tuning over the past decade. I love the way the car drives and most importantly...THE CAR HAS STAYED TOGETHER FOR ALMOST 100K. Anyone can claim to get the most power out of a car, but what good is it if it made 5 more HP and has a broken motor and is sitting in the garage...

Mike has done an excellent job on the non cookie cutter tunes like speed density and hybrid maf/speed density tunes like I run on mine. He does not just load in a tune that is 90% there do 2 pulls and call it good enough. He will spend a lot of time to get it correct without cleaning out your wallet.

When comparing most of his dyno numbers under most have been on our stingy-reading Mustang dyno that read approximately 10% lower than competitor dynos in our area.

I would absolutely recommend Mike (Tuning Alliance) based on the years of seeing his work at our shop, as well as my personal vehicles.

  7. Yeah, when I unplugged that it made most of those go away. Nothing in the ecu will make a difference in the can bus error however you will need to turn p700 codes off related to the tranny. From what I can remember, when I compares the wiring diagrams of the manual and auto lgt, there were quite a few differences, especially when it came to the cruise control. The tcm seemed to play a big part in the cruise control on the automatic. Even the abs units were different from one to the other. Hence why I stopped the install where I did, instead of replacing half the car.
  8. Running the original auto ECU, original cluster. Once the TCM is unplugged, all the tranny related lights in the cluster go away, as does the lighting around the P R N D 2 1 on the cluster. Wiring is very simple doing it this way.

You will lose cruise control and get an ERR that displays on the odometer. This goes away when you toggle through the trip logs on the odometer but pops back up when you are done.

The cluster is identical other than the PRND21 on there. Nobody every notices it. Most people can't believe the car is not a manual from the factory.

70K miles running the car this way and it has been great.

Sorry, just getting around to posting this now. Please forgive my terrible 60ft times as it was my first drag passes with this car. Car has a few more 10ths in it judging by the trap speed...

I'll print off a Dyno Plot and attach it tomorrow when I'm back in the shop.

  10. next time i'm in the area i'll try to swing by, though i'm catted.

but you've probably heard it :p

Cool. If you're up this way swing buy. I had the AVO cans, got a no-name exhaust and a Magnaflow LGT in the shop now, but haven't heard the Borla on the road, just on the dyno.

Leonardo, the cutouts are nice but people always seems to have issues with them sticking and not closing all the way. On the V8 stuff it really isn't a big deal as half the cars with headers sound like an exhaust leak, but on a quiet car it can be annoying.

  11. Well all the engine and tranny codes can be turned off with an AccessPORT, but the Can bus codes and odometer Error I would say so.

Its not really the installation of all the parts that is the killer for me, its installing it all and having to tow the car over to the dealer to have everything reflashed just to see if it works. If you had the entire car (with the key and immobilizer) that might save that step.

PS. Mufflers are awesome by the way. Used parts from Florida look nothing like used parts from up here. 358 WHP and not a sound out of the car :)

  12. I have a few more questions....

    1. Does the transmission out of the nonturbo legacy fit the GT?

    2. If I was to do the 06 STI Swap..would I need to get the manual ECU/Cluster etc from the manual LGT or would I be able to ground the pin in the ECU like normal? How would this work?

    3. Where can I source a MT for the car? Ive tried ebay but all Ive found is the tranny for nonturbo.

No idea. If the non-turbo tranny fits. Check out http://www.car-part.com for a used Legacy turbo transmission.

  13. I would say $800 to $1000 in labor to do a 5 speed swap to the point I have done in my vehicle now. I am running the auto ecu, with no CEL, fully functioning ABS, auto cluster (fully functioning, with the ERR message that pops up on the trip meter). Cruise is the only non-working option.

Six speed swap would be on the higher side as there is a little more labor involved there.

I would want the car for 2-3 days to be safe (just in case we were missing some parts).

I would be willing to try to swap over all the goodies (manual ECU, cluster, etc.) but this would take some trial and error time including a tow to the dealer once the items were installed to have everything reprogrammed to work together. Unless someone wants to get the immobilizer, key, ecu, cluster, and abs module from one donor car and we could try that without it leaving the shop. Most salvage yards won't give you the key which is the real pain. I would need the car quite a bit longer to do it that way and figure everything out.
