  1. The one above is 98/99, the pic below is a 97 cluster, and the 95/96 were white needles and gauges that look the same as 97 but go up to 140. http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z314/987687/98%20Legacy%20GT/230k.jpg
  2. That one you were talking about on ultimate subaru? that's gonna be a sweet project
  3. That's so sad As has been said on usmb, you put so much into that car. Terrible that had to happen.
  4. pretty much every year between 95 and 99 got a different speedo. One or two are the same. If your engine isn't shaking at idle, it's probably just fine. If it's actually idling low it will shake a bit. Chances are your tach is off. I had one that always read on the first line, but when I plugged an OBD2 reader in it was right at 700. Where it's supposed to be.
  5. If you idle at 400 something is messed up. That's low. You're probably reading the gauge wrong. Today was a fucked up day for my car. Pulling out of work to get lunch a truck went by, threw up a rock and broke my windshield. Cracked right in half. Great. The bam CEL pops on. After work I was mounting my summer tires and smelled gas at the back right.... I'm not even going to bother to read the code.... There's another $100 down the drain in a stupid filler neck.
  6. It's not really THAT much trouble. If you have a good block it's no harder than a HG job. I need a good engine though, and the cheapest way to get the best engine possible is to completely rebuild one. So while I'm at it, I may as well do some mods. I have an ej22 swap in the legacy now, but that engine is a POS that burns oil and has totally unknown history/mileage, etc.
  7. I was just talking about this on another forum today, actually. I'm starting a rebuild on a 25d block now, I'll have dual port 22 heads and performance cams. Should be quick.
  8. Plenty of them running around no issues without over a thousand bucks tied up in studs and gaskets.
  9. I want to do that also! I have a 2.5 block that's been badly overheated a few times to seizure, but before I tore it down still ran and didn't knock. I'm looking at doing a full rebuild. Should be fun! I'm also going to put cams in it, may as well while it's all apart!
  10. if the same engine keeps blowing head gaskets, putting new head gaskets in it is pointless. You need to have it checked out by a machine shop. The head may be warped, or the block deck not flat. Or something else...
  11. It's my 98. And nope, it doesn't come from subaru with that gauge cluster It isn't blue from subaru either..
  12. So a total rebuild. Nice!! I want to do a complete rebuild on my old 2.5 block and then put rebuild 2.2 heads on it.
  13. And you don't hate it yet? I just swapped a 2.2 into mine. And now that I'm in the 2nd gen thread I can't get yelled at for posting this http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z314/987687/98%20Legacy%20GT/230k.jpg
  14. Wait until the engine warms up and have fun... If you get a 2.5 computer you can spin it to 6.5k
  15. Nice!! Have you done regular tranny flushes to keep it going that high miles?
  16. I got my 98 with 228k miles. Blown head gasket and overheated to the point of seizure twice. Still started up and ran without any bad noises though. crazy tough little engine. But it was on it's second head gaskets
  17. Just the price of gaskets is close to $150. I think that's about what I had into mine when I resealed it couple weeks ago.
  18. There's no reason not to replace them before they blow!! Then you won't get stuck in the middle of nowhere and risk messing up the engine. Tell tale sign of a bad gasket are bubbles in the coolant overflow. I'm not saying don't do it, the HGs WILL blow. They ALL do. I'm just saying $300 sounds cheap.
  19. Owning a car in Japan is A LOT LOT LOT LOT LOT LOT more expensive than in the US too.
  20. Put some miles on my GT today and noticed that it actually has 228k. haha. It drives pretty nice. Still getting used to seeing the spoiler thing on the trunk.
  21. That's a really clean car! I see you're in Maine. You should check out http://www.mainelysubarus.com/ It's a local Maine forum with a lot of good knowledge and people who'll give you a hand for cheap. 226k on my GT still... I've only put on 8 miles since I did the ej22 swap. And all of them without registration, insurance, or inspection. On public roads... haha.
