  1. Before the Outback my daily driver of 10 years was a MY96 Audi S6 wagon which had factory HID lights; after installing complete headlight modules sourced from Audi Germany. Back in 1995, the 1st generation HIDs made by Hella had the ballast and xenon bulb permanently connected making a bulb failure expensive. 2nd generation HIDs quickly altered this ballast/bulb configuration.

My MY98 911 has OEM HIDs. In ten years /50K miles the 911 has not had a single HID bulb failure; neither has my wife’s MY00 Boxster. That is not to say xenon bulbs do not fail, they do.

Maybe, just maybe there’s a high quality 4300K HID aftermarket kit in the Outback’s future. Does the Subaru’s projector assemblies include lenses with an appropriate cut off to support a xenon light source? Could look cheesy with an excessivily bright bulb and a funky lens cut off? What brand of HID kits have other used?

Short of a HID option, I’d support Subaru offering a headlight high pressure washer so I can stop pulling off highway to clean the headlights. Ski time in the Rockies is a bitch...w/o washers.

    911, Boxster + 1 Outback ???

Wowie you have quite the garage. Are you a doctor or lawyer? Nice...that would be my choices if I had the money. 911 at least and a Subie.

  2. Cabin filter replacement by Bosch p/n P3785 is near free addition worth mentioning for as little as $13 (I got mine at Kragen for less than $20 with tax):

For 2007+ models all you need to do is drop glove box/panels and remove metal bracket that holds the sound proofing pad. Then you can get to the cabin filter bracket which is behind the top shelf of glove compartment.

At least $100 less than what the dealer charges for this DIY

  3. It's all tucked neatly above the headliner.. what gets in the way? You're not going to get rid of the small bulge in the headliner...

When the belt is not in use it tucks neatly up into the ceiling out of the way..

The strap is attached to the ceiling / headliner. So when I pull the rear seats down to use the wagon like a truck...the strap is still attached and gets in the way when hauling stuff.

Although I probably use my wagon a lot more like a truck than the average owner.

what about left front wheel bearing replacements? mine has only 9K miles but the bearings are intermittently scraping.

  5. This won't work with our cars. The center console isn't symetrical :(

The center pieces do come off quite easily. Search for 'Vacation Pics'. They should give you a better idea of how things work. ;)

I know the shift plate and center design is different between U.S. and JDM models.

However as far as those 2 side pieces that surround the center...the photo appears to be the exact same size/location no?

  6. ...you need to remove the shifter boot and cover, the piece of fake wood trim to the left of the shifter and the fascia piece along the forward driver's side of the center console.

Does anyone have any interior part diagrams or photos of this? I am not sure where the retainer clips are and would like to remove these parts. The fake wood trim pieces that run along the side of the console...and the shifter panel to install a custom boot.

I want to paint the fake cherry wood plastic pieces as well. Looks like it can easily break when trying to remove from the retainer clips.
